Re: Keep getting cut-off Speedtouch connection
loveistanbul: Dai Young:Have you tried the hidden master socket test? It's imperative that you do so. How do I actually test the master socket Dai? Look at the picture I posted earlier and you'll see a red square. This marks the hidden test socket. You'll need to undo the two screws of the NTE5 and pull the lower half of the faceplate away. Now connect your modem directly to the revealed socket. You'll probably need a filter in place.

Re: Keep getting cut-off Speedtouch connection
I have checked all the sockets and each one is working fine we have two phone lines and the computer line which runs through our B.T. line. They all have seperate ADSL filters on them.

Re: Keep getting cut-off Speedtouch connection
If the disconnects are that bad, it seems almost certainly to be equipment related. The problem is that you are responsible for everything your side of the master socket so you must ensure for your own sake that all is fully functional here by carrying out the tests as outlined above. Then, and only then should you report the matter to your ISP as a line/exchange fault. An ethernet based connection far outperforms a USB based connection in terms of stability, reliability and transfer rate etc. As has been stated, you'll need to remove the case or side of the computer, remove a backplate, fit the card to the corresponding slot, fix it and reassemble. A local computer shop shouldn't charge more than around £40 for fitting if you don't feel able. From there, if you provide details of your ethernet modem, I can guide you through setting up your connection.

Re: Keep getting cut-off Speedtouch connection
Hi guys, Have tried all the options that were available and the problem is persiting, I had 2 hours and 13 minutes of internet connection and then just after this the first in a series of cuts, each re-connection is only lasting five minutes and then is cutting again, it looks like another night not talking to my girlfriend I really do not know what to do next, this cannot go on I will not stand for it. Would it be best to get an Ethernet connection and buy a network interface card, I am not sure what is best? hope to get this message finished before it cuts

Re: Keep getting cut-off Speedtouch connection
ty4that:Appreciate your communications are technical but reason I asked simplistic... do you lose anything when you go out/in is because talktalk cuts out frequently comes back in immediately and I don't lose anything. I've accepted it. Should I? I also have Speedtouch. Thanks You most certainly should not accept it. Broadband is sold as an always on product although TT, through its AOL acquisition are now trying to redefine that term in the same way that their forerunners redefined the term "unlimited". According to my router my PPP uptime is currently: 99 days 18 hours 8 mins 31 secs

Re: Keep getting cut-off Speedtouch connection
Every OS I can think of including XP has Ethernet capability..... Once a NIC is fitted! If your computer is a branded box such as a Dell or HP etc, post the model number. It may have an onboard NIC that's been disabled at BIOS level.

I think that this Speedtouch modem is the bog standard modem and maybe it is not a very good one, I have been reading alot of bad things about it. Rich

Re: Keep getting cut-off Speedtouch connection
Dai Young: Simply download, unzip and install the drivers. The installation will remove the existing drivers and replace them with the updated drivers. It is not advisable to use ISP provided installation CDs anyway! There is a slight chance that the modem may be set to "disconnect if connection is no longer needed" or similar. This is unlikely if the disconnects occur whilst a connection is active but still worth checking. If the situation doesn't improve after installing the new drivers and disabling power saving etc, you'll need to place your computer near to the master socket, remove the lower faceplate of that socket, connect directly to the hidden test socket and see what happens for a few hours. If no disconnects occur now, you have an internal cabling/telephony equipment/filter problem. If this is the case and a BTo engineer is asked to attend, you will be liable for a £130+ bill so as you can see, it's important to eliminate these eventualities. BTo are now actively enforcing full payment!!! If, after the driver installation, power saving disablement and internal tests/repairs, the problem persists, it's indicative of a line/exchange/ISP fault. Dai, Thanks mate you really do know your stuff, I am a real amateur when it comes to problems like this, I will follow all your instructions to the book, as I write my connection is 1 hour 42 minutes the longest connection in a few days this is what has me baffled by it, I also looked at the website and thought maybe I could change modems. Thanks again Rich

Re: Keep getting cut-off Speedtouch connection
Daniel306: As Dai Young said you can buy a PCI NIC (network INterface card) for not much over a fiver and it slots in nice and easy and basically installs itself. Cheers Daniel great to know there is help at hand here
