Read our Guide to Credit Scoring in the loans channel. Alternatively go to the address below:

Ah - I don't think we tried them. I'll give it a go. Thanks again.

I did have one online success, with Alliance and Leicester, try them. Best of luck.

    Re: Joint account refused

Thanks for the advice, Francine. We really wanted an online account as neither of us works near a branch of the same bank and where we live there's nothing open on a Saturday. But I appreciate you taking the time to reply.

Not much there then. My daughter and her boyfriend had a similar experience trying to open an account on line. However, when they went into the branch (Nationwide) they had no problems. I have an Advantage Gold account with NatWest but wanted to apply for an account online with another bank I was refused also (no explanation) Perhaps you could try going directly to a branch?

    Re: Joint account refused

I did get one, yes. It was absolutely clear. There was one missed payment on a store card about 7 years ago (slip up) but everything else was about as good as it could be. The only thing I could think of was this "association" with my partner's name.

Have you actally got a copy of your credit report from Experian for example?

    Joint account refused

    Hi there

My partner and I tried to open a joint online-only account just before Christmas and were repeatedly turned down - we tried several different well-known banks/building societies.

On applying for my credit rating, it turns out it is pretty much excellent (937 out of 1000) and the only thing I can see on there is that I am "associated" with my partner's name. We've been living together for over five years and I've never been turned down for anything before (have a mortgage, credit cards, ISA and current account), so I can't figure out what's wrong.

We decided to just open another account in my name and he would pay into it for things we needed to pay for jointly, but now I'm being turned down for credit!

    Does anyone have any advice?
