ISA account refusal for no reason

I tried to open an ISA account with Alliance & Leicester but I was rejected even though I meet all the criteria. At the time of opening the account and after they took a copy of all my documents I was assured that everything is fine and I gave them a cheque for £2000.

I didn’t hear anything from them for the next 10 days and when I enquired about it they told me to go the branch to collect my cheque. They refused to tell me why my application was rejected and all they said was that it’s central data base their head office uses and they don’t know why I have been refused. Can a bank refuse my application without giving me an explanation? How do I find out why I have been refused from having an ISA account?

Do you have any other ISA accounts? If your £2000 would bring you up to £3000 limit for this tax year you cannot open another. BB

Re: ISA account refusal for no reason

    Hi

No I don’t have an ISA account, this was going to be my first ISA account. I believe I meet all the requirements as I am an ordinary UK resident, British Citizen and am over 20. Yet I am still being refused for no reason. Can a bank verbally refuse my application without giving me an explanation? How do I find out why I have been refused from having an ISA account?

    Thanks

Do you have any history with A&L? I understand that a bank can refuse an account to anyone without giving reasons. Have you considered another Bank?

Strange! I applied via their website for an ISA last week and had my acceptance e-mail (with instructions) the very same day.

Although, they did refuse me for a Business account a month or so ago and said it was because of my credit rating, which was excellent.

That kind of suggests that they have a fairly weird system.
