    Insurance for moving house

I have home and contents insurance with Halifax. My policy covers me for a house move lasting no more than 72 hours but we will need cover for 6 days - most of that time our belongings will be in storage. I've requested an extension to our policy but Halifax will not cover us. I've contacted other insurance companies but they only cover existing customers and worse yet, won't accept us as a new customer because of our imminent move. We'll be using a reputable removal company (Pickfords or Bishop's Move) but this doesn't seem to be enough. Both removal companies offer their own insurance packages but at 14% of the moving cost - it seems way over the odds.

Is there any way around this problem?

Hi -- This self storage insurer has had a couple of mentions on this forum, give them a try for a quote.

Thanks but I already tried them. They said they couldn't insure us with a removal company being involved.

Can I just ask which other insurance companies you stated you have approached?

The fact that you chose Halifax as an insurance company in the first instance suggests that you are taking avenues along the lines of bancassurance or direct insurance companies. Both of which are absolutely useless if you want a decent policy that does not fall into the perfect world of Mr and Mrs Smith-Jones.

Direct Line and More Than. What's a 'bedroom rated policy'? As you can probably tell, I'm a bit green when it comes to insurance!

Ah ha. Just as I expected. Direct insurers. Ones that have standard wording for standard situations for standard people and be gone any sailor that doesn't fit into ye ship.

You should be approaching a different market open to altering the conditions of the policy. The above companies are not going to do that as it's not how they work. Their policy is 'What you see is what you get'; and what you're getting is nye on rubbish considering it's hard cash you're paying in!

Contact brokers that deal with a variety of insurances. They are also more than likely to have come across this type of situation before. It will probably be cheaper or more beneficial to you anyway!

PS. a Bedroom rated policy is the level of sums insured depending on how many bedrooms your property has. Halifax falls below par on their pay-out limit.

Thanks for your advice. I'm guessing the BIBA website is the next port of call.

Yep - that might be of some use using their broker finder http://www.biba.org.uk/ConsumerHome.aspx .
