Re: Insurance for Mechanics to drive other vehicles

Here is a link to a site that offers some trader's policys and it is useful because it has a good selection of FAQ's to look at and see whether the Motor Trader's policy is the right type of insurance to obtain.

Beware that the insurance company does make checks that he is in fact running a business and may want evidence of that. Also the policies for traders starting out are quite expensive and an ordinary NCB isn't "normally allowed" against a Motor Trader's policy

    jettagti:

Put it this way, he does jobs for friends when they do jobs for us, they will drop there car off and then he will drop it back.

Then he is not a trader. !

I do bits of decorating for family or friends, but I am not a decorator.

Your Husband should carefully check his own existing private motor policy, he may well already have the driving other cars extension (DOC) this would give him limited Third party cover only, to drive a car that does not belong or is not hired to him..... providing he has the owners permission of course.

If he is on his employers business then he should be covered by them. If he isn't and is doing work on the side then he either accepts that he is only covered as part of his own private insurance policy (usually Third Party only) or become legit and register as self employed and then buy a motor traders policy.

jettagti:I forgot to say he isnt a motor trader but employed, would I still be able to get the motor traders insurance?

His employer could and should arrange this for him, if he is expected to drive other cars as part of his employment role..ask him to voice his concerns with his employer. If he is a self employed trader in his spare time, he can arrange his own cover as per my first post.

If he isn't a trader at all, then he should not apply for a traders policy I hasten to add.

ATM - Did Arfur actually insure any of his Mowtar's.?

I used to get a policy for part-time trader but did have premises, you may have to approach a few different insurance companies or go to a high street broker who may have good contacts.

Re: Insurance for Mechanics to drive other vehicles

I used to get a motor traders policy via one of the companies listed in the Thames Valley Auto Trader weekly magazine, but have not read that mag for 18 months or so now.

Swinton also do a motor traders policy (0800 316 2894) but try to get a few quotes.

CMK Should have given them Terry's number!
