    Inheritance tax/solicitors

I feel very let down by my solicitors;I received a notificatioon for Inheritance tax in September for over £90,000 -£2,400 of this was interest because the solicitors failed to notify me at the end of January that it was due to be paid on 1 February 2007.I managed to pay the full amount in September

Since then I have asked the solicitors for a refund of the £2,400 saying that I hold them responsible - they admit they are liable but are only prepared to offer me the difference between having that money on deposit since 1 February and the time I paid the Inheritance Tax bill in September; I don't see that their response is fair or reasonable - can anyone advise me how I should proceed; I feel that they should pay the £2,400 . I have been let down by them and it has caused me no-end of worry.

Hi -- They carry insurance for negligence and losses caused through their failure to offer correct advice, it would seem their failure to advise you correctly is a negligence to carry out their duty of protecting your interests.

Complain to the law society about their conduct.

Thanks for you help; I am going to write one last letter to them and if I don't get a satisfactory reply I will contact the Law Society; Do you think it is worth mentioning that to the Solicitors when I write to them?

Yes mention that too, although I suspect they will already have anticipated that you are going to complain, and were just hoping you would accept the lower amount compensation they have offered, they will not want you claiming off their insurance and will probably settle out of their own funds in the end. !!!

I'll let you know what happens; I'm still drafting and redrafting a letter to them - trying to keep to the point and trying not to get too worked up.

Thanks for your input so far
