    Re: Independant Gas Transporters

    Hi

Even suppliers who will accept IGT won't offer their best deals to IGT customers. This is affecting an increasing number of households as it only applies to new build properties. The suppliers aren't to blame in this case, it is the deregualtion of the market that has allowed this to happen. It should be a requirement that you are informed of this when you buy a new property, but it isn't.

More people need to complain to energywatch to get this changed. The savings the builder makes should be passed on to the purchaser as they are going to foot the bill

    Re: Independant Gas Transporters

Not only are you paying more for your gas, but also you can be stopped from taking up some of the offers from other suppliers when trying to switching as they state not available to people on IGT's.

    bobf:Hi Scott,
I wonder if there is an office of fair trading who could get us a fairer result when you consider how many homes this affects my
    estate alone is 200 plus.

You'd think, I complained the other day to them through their consumer direct service. They said look at their T&Cs to see if it's unfair, or talk to energywatch. I've been to energywatch already and they seem spinless. They won't ask ofgem the regulator to do anything about it until enough people complain.

I said to them that Scottish Power, my supplier, told me they had 170,000 customers at the time with an IGT - surely that's enough, but the lady didn't know the answer. Typical useless government organisation! I've written to my MP, but I'm not expecting any joy with him either.

Where I live, there have been circa 2000 houses built in the last 3-4 years and the impression I am under is that everyone has a IGT!

    Re: Independant Gas Transporters

    BobF,

I have just contacted Scottish & Southern and they have confirmed that they no longer pass on the extra cost to IGT customers.

It may therefore be in your interest to look at the tariffs on offer from Scottish & Southern on our website. Please be advised that Scottish & Southern brands include Scottish Hydro, Southern Electric, Atlantic Electric & Gas and SWALEC. All of which no longer charge this IGT fee.

Use are comparison tool and have a look for the best deal.

If you require any further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me.

    Re: Independant Gas Transporters

    Hi Scott,
Many thanks for your explanation as to why the extra charge comes about. The only ones to gain yet again seems the builders
    doing things on the cheap.
I wonder if there is an office of fair trading who could get us a fairer result when you consider how many homes this affects my
    estate alone is 200 plus.
Finally my post code is dy1.

    Many thanks,

    Re: Independant Gas Transporters

I live in a flat complex where the gas is an IGT supply also. A salesman for Scottish & Southern Energy came round on Wednesday and insisted that they do not charge extra for IGT gas than normal gas. He checked with his supervisor and has written on the contract that no IGT charges will apply. Hope this helps.

    Re: Independant Gas Transporters

    Bob,

It appears that you are an IGT customer. This means that you are served by an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT) network (i.e. not Transco) and may find that the price you pay for gas is slightly higher than the standard published price provided by your gas supplier (Scottish Power).

This is because the gas supplier must pay both Transco and the Independent Gas Transporter (Elf at Home) to deliver gas through the pipes to your home.

In practical terms there is nothing wrong with having an Independent Gas Transporter deliver the gas to your home, the downside is the additional cost element.

Many house builders use Independent Gas Transporters to save money when they are building new properties as the Independent Gas Transporters will offer, in most cases, a more competitive price for all the connection work than Transco.

The problem occurs when you then wish to compare the prices offered by the gas suppliers. Some of the low cost gas suppliers will not quote for a supply to property connected via an Independent Gas Transporter and the majority of other suppliers will charge a premium.

So, whilst the house builder gets a good deal when installing the gas network, you the domestic consumer end up paying for this in increased costs.

Scottish Power was one of the last energy providers to pass on this extra charge as a result of dramatic changes in the energy market.

To answer your question, I'm not aware of any suppliers who do not make this extra charge for IGT customers.

I hope this is of use to you.

Should you require any further assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

    Independant Gas Transporters

I have been with Scotish Power for Gas and Electricity since 2000 about 18 months ago they added an extra charge which is now
10.96 pence per day £40 per year. This because when our house was built in1997 Crest Homes used A Gas which became
Elf at Home to put in the pipe work to carry gas to all houses on the site approximatly 200 houses. Scottish power say they
have to pay Elf at Home a fee to use their pipe work to supply me with Gas. Iam now looking for a new suplier as they have
just put my monthly direct debit up by 25%. Does anyone know of a company that does not make this charge?
    Thank you
    Bob.
