    IGT surcharge on gas supply

    Hi

Is there anyone else out there who is being hit with an Independent Gas Transporter charge because they are not connected to the National Grid gas pipeline network?

I use a mimimal amount of gas but EDF, in their wisdom, have just advised me that as from the 25 July they have, in retrospect, been charging me an amount of 11.5p per day for this service which I believe is the norm for most new houses as it saves the builder's money.

This is at a time when the government are asking people to use less enery and just seems another way of the big energy companies making even more profit by making this 'standing ' charge.

Scottish Power used to charge ALL customers this fixed con money

I am pleased to inform you that this was stopped some time ago

I suggest that you contact EDF asking for their reasons for this charge and inform them that unless they stop taking it - that you will leave EDF !!

    Hi All

The IGT charge is applied by all companies, including ScottishPower I am afraid. Its a standard charge which although it collected by your supplier it is passed onto the IGT.

Realistically the only one who has won here is the builder, they put out to tender for installing gas mains and meters to their new builds, Transco (who used to do all the UK) would quote say £1 million, but the other IGT's say one of them the Gas Transportation Company - GTC (one of the biggest) would quote £750,000 whose your builder going to choose ? yeah the IGT they are after saving money.

The IGT then install everything and connect their mains onto the Transco network, then your supplier has is charged by Transco for the transportation of your gas from their storage, via their mains, then your supplier is charged by the IGT for the gas coming into their mains pipes up to your house.

So I'm afraid realistically it ain the supplier but the builders who are winning here.

    Hi.

I have already spoken to EDF and they say that as they are charged by the gas transporter they have to pass this cost on to people like me and if I wish to leave them then to let them know! Up until this problem I was really pleased with their service. Just got my 3 month bill which is £4 gas used and £4.50 surcharge for the last 5 weeks.

I will contact Scottish Power and see what they say.

    Thanks for replying.

Their is a tarriff at E.on (where i work!) called energy discount. Thier is no igt charge and you get a discount of 10 percent off your bills. it's a Direct Debit tarriff and you are fixed in the tarriff till 2009 with a charge of £30 for coming off it.

It's not a bad tarriff but your probably better off on one fo the many online tarriffs. It's still best to compare tarriffs before going on it but it saves arounf £40 a year on igt charge and then the 10 percent off E.ons standard prices (which are not the cheapest but may be worth a look.
