    Re: Icesave aftermath

Thanks Jacqui, I couldn't remember his name. And this is not revenge but simply to hold the Icesave hierarchy to account for their actions. This was not an ordinary crash to which some UK banks succumbed but rather a carefully engineered plot to relieve UK and Netherlands savers and institutions of as much cash as possible. For those in any doubt of the philosophy of the Icelandic banks, the following is well worth reading (fairly long so I won't post the text here):

Entitled Iceland: what ugly secrets are waiting to be exposed in the meltdown?
Almost a year since the collapse of the Icelandic banks, the rotten nature of these financial corpses is slowly beginning to emerge.

Wow - great to see so many contributions. Will be with you in spirit at 6 (only because I'll still be at work) but in person around 8pm to crack open the wine.....I read the article and it made sombre reading.... I also remember that Slime ball Chief Exec and his interview - it would be nice to have him held to account....

    thanks again to everyone

It takes a brave man to say that Jacqui is wrong but I must take issue with her. While totally agreeing that the administrative qualities of the FSCS were, shall we say, somewhat lacking; I nevertheless believe that I have found a worthy and tenacious opponent to steal their crown.I refer to the last six months dealing on my daughter's behalf with Student Finance who I am sure have employed all those amazing people from FSCS. They are truly awful.

    HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! (tongue-in-cheek)

Sauvignon Blanc wine open… £35K FSCS compensation 'safe' in NatWest ISA which has gained £1076 interest over 10 months. Can't complain.

    Cheers everyone!

    Re: Icesave aftermath

Hi all. Was surprised to see so many people on here again!!! I check back now and then just to see if anyone has posted.

I had to pick up my son from the airport last night so didnt get on here, but I hadn't forgotten that awful time last year when we all didnt know if we would ever see our money again. Like most of you this site helped me realise I wasn't the only one who had been stupid enough to put my money in the hands of the Icelandics and was very grateful for all the help and support everyone seemed to give to each other.

I shall have to have that glass of wine tonight now I think. Cheers everyone.

Hope everyone is well and managing to make the best of their money with interest rates so low.

    Take care Brenda xxx

    Re: Icesave aftermath

    Hi everybody,

Like some of you said this forum was a great place for support because I quickly realised we were all in the same boat and we weren't suffering alone.

I'll never forget that sinking feeling I had in my gut when I heard the news on 5 Live on the drive home from work. I put on a brave face when my wife said "is that where you put our money" insisting that the Government would sort it out but secretly I thought it had gone for good.

I no longer invest in foreign banks, once bitten twice shy, and although the rates I got with my local BS are poor compared to what Icesave paid at least they are protected by the Government.

Visiting Australia in 3 weeks for a 5 week tour so I'll be raising a few glasses in Margaret River and the Yarra Valley and prolonging the summer.

    Happy Anniversary.

    Re: Icesave aftermath

Hello again everyone!!!! Can't believe how quickly the time has gone, and must admit to forgetting the anniversary, but have lots of things keeping me busy at the moment... Well done to everyone for keeping up their spirits up when all looked so bad at times on the emotional rollercoaster that was Icesave!! The Telegraph article mentioned above makes an interesting read, and there may well be interest from the SFO into some of the dealings of Landsbanki et al...... If the Icesave collapse had happened this time now I don't think we would have been so lucky to have this government step in to help us, and if the Conservatives were to be in power I doubt if we would have seen a penny of our cash back....in anycase!! CHEERS everyone, and good luck in the future.....DAN

    Morning All

Must admit to missing the anniversary as well. Lovely to see so many of us posting again. Been a much more peaceful year so far. My heart goes out to the others with offshore account who did not fare as well as we did. I hope that some form of resolution comes for them as well.

Health, happiness and wealth to you all (in that order!).

    Re: Icesave Anniversary

    Oops! I missed it!

I've been checking in here from time to time, but the second half of 'that year' has sped by and I missed the actual anniversary. The retirement that we were saving so hard for, and of which the Icesave money was not a large but nevertheless very significant amount, has arrived and life has been very busy. I only had one year's worth of ISA money with them, plus a few thousand more in the fixed rate accounts, but I well remember that sickening sinking feeling when it all went pear shaped and I thought my carefully planned savings had been swallowed by the Icelandics. I'll never forget listening to Alistair Darling assuring us the government would see us OK.

Then I came on here and discovered others with greater worries than me and we became a little support club, without which I am sure many of us would have had nervous breakdowns. I have to say though, that after the intial wait for information from the FSCS, I had nothing but praise for them. They devised the only sensible method with which to get the funds back to us using the internet instead of a longwinded paper system, and kept me informed all along the way. The ISA money came through initially, and then the fixed rate monies arrived on the dot after I'd elected to keep them in at the 7% interest rate.

It's lovely to see so many old names back on here, and I'm sorry to be late joining you in the celebrations. But I'd like to send each and every one of you all the very best wishes for the present and the future. Let's hope we all survive this present economic climate with our money in safe, if not wildly exciting places.
