As you may have seen in my other post, it's nearly a year since the collapse of the Icelandic banks Kaupthing, Glitnir and Landsbanki and we’d like to hear your stories of how you were affected. Were you a depositor in Landsbanki Guernsey or Kaupthing IoM? Are you still waiting for compensation? Were you a saver with Icesave UK? How has the last year been for you? Is huckster right? Who will accept responsibility? As the forgotten victims of the crisis - there are an estimated 20,000 of you - we're planning on raising awareness of your plight, so please let us know how you're getting on and what your views are on the situation. If you're willing to talk the the press about your ongoing battle, let us know too. We'd love to hear how you've all been getting on...

It will be a year tomorrow, 7 October, that the message appeared on Icesave's website: ''We are not currently processing any deposit or any withdrawal requests.''Since receiving full compensation from the FSCS in November 2008, I put my ISA money in a NatWest ISA which has continued to earn a reasonable rate of interest given the low interest rates over the past year. This forum was a terrific support during the Icesave crisis. I even found great deals on insurance thanks to moneysupermarket's comparison tables, which I continue to use. Best wishes to anyone still logging in to the forum. It would be great to see a few posts on the anniversary of Icesave's collapse.

Hi Swifts, Must admit that I didn't think anyone would remember the Icesave anniversary. It's been on my mind for the last two weeks. Although eventually receiving full compensation, the emotional toll and that awful sinking feeling when the news first broke will always stay with me. As it is said that everyone remembers where they were when news of president kennedy's assassination was announced, I guess the same applies to all Icesave savers. It was a close call and I really felt that my wife and I had lost around £60k. I still thank Brown/Darling for bailing us out and i still feel the Tories would have left us high and dry had they been in power. I still avoid all things Icelandic like the plague. I would like to see some other old friends on here and hear their thoughts. Best wishes, Acecard.

Hi Acecard, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY - LOL! It's been on my mind too for the last couple of weeks. I'll never forget the shock of logging in to Icesave to get my money out as I knew they were in big trouble. Too late - they'd gone bust! I almost threw up!
Yes, I agree the Tories would probably have left us high and dry. I'm not politically minded but I promised to vote Labour at the next election if I got my money back in full. I did, so I will vote for them as a thank you. All the best, Swifts

Hi Swifts and Acecard I know exactly what you mean about the sinking feeling - we thought we had lost the best part of 49k and thats a lot of hard earned cash of anybody's money......I was a bit later than most and only realised that I couldn't get at our money until I heard some news on Radio 5 live and by then I felt physically sick.. Like you swifts our money has been with Nat West which was as good as I could find at the time although Mrs Microlighter transferred her ISA to the Cheshire which had a good rate until this December It would be great to hear from one or two other posters - best wishes to all......

Morning all and Happy One Year Anniversary to all those who were considerably financially worse off this time last year! I remember it all so well - we had had an appointment with our financial advisor the night before and she had suggested moving what money I could out of Icesave. She had not recommended Icesave incidentally. I just thought I was being clever in ignoring her advise and shoving £70,000 into an account that I had found which was paying more than her recommendation! £50,000 was committed to a six month bond, with around a month still to run - but I still had theoretical access to the remaining £20,0000. Hmmmmm! Obviously proven not to be the case come 7th October last year when we were graced by the platitudes on Icesave's website stating that they were currently not processing withdrawal or deposit requests. Interesting use of the word 'currently'!I subsequently joined this fantastic forum and found each and every one of you to provide a fantastic support network. My days over the ensuing weeks entailed surfacing out of bed early, cup of tea in hand, and logging onto the forum to read everyone's posts whilst flitting around other websites looking at what I could no longer afford. Oh, and I slotted completing the occasional job application form in too. I really felt as though we became firm friends, all of us understanding and empathising with each other's plight.Thank Goodness we were finally reunited with our funds (did those offshore customers ever receive theirs in total)? I celebrated by treating myself to lots of Murano glass with which to make some jewellery. This is a hobby of mine and I retail it through a few shops (my bridal range) and at local summer and Christmas fayres. I can still remember that jubilation when I received my 'second e mail' (do you remember pressing the 'send/receive' button two million times a day to hurry the receipt of your e mail up?). I was one of the first to receive my e mail (the second person to post on this forum and the first 'regular forum contributor') and it made me jump when it pinged up in my inbox. I felt like I had won a Willy Wonker golden ticket. I was too scared to act upon the e mail and made my husband sit with me in the evening whilst I did so. I wasn't only delighted for myself, but also to be able to share the news with all of you - to try and instill a bit of hope that things were indeed finally progressing after weeks of chasing the ever erant FSCS (they were an administrative nightmare!). We then spent the next 100 pages or so (or so it seemed) speculating on the forum in which order the e mails were despatched. I am still convinced they were random.Since then, I have been invigilating at the University of Cambridge (for those students sitting their finals in the summer (it certainly brought it all back - sitting in the exam hall knowing how important the exams were) and now for the vetinary and medical examinations). I also helped my friend by running her bridal shop for a couple of months. I have applied for something a little more permanent at the University and also at a couple of other local places and am just waiting to hear. Hope everyone has been keeping well and it would be fab if others could pop a post on the forum today. I think we should make this an annual event - as well as additional posts from those who wish to contribute thoroughout the year.Look forward to hearing from youJacquixxxxxxx

Hello all - I can still remember the exact amount I had in my frozen Icesave account - if I ever need a new pin number, it will be an easy one to remember! Did anyone watch 'The Love of Money' series recently on BBC2? It felt quite odd watching them describe the collapse of the Icelandic banks. It also reminded me of what seemed a long wait for the FSCS to sort out the compensation, and waiting for that elusive second email. I remember I got fed up waiting, and on the advice of some other posters here, I logged in and managed to reclaim my money before the email arrived. I found this forum a great source of support, especially when friends and family thought I'd taken a huge risk even thinking about putting my money in a foreign bank, and that I should have known better. I think I'll have a glass of wine tonight, and I shall toast Alistair Darling for stepping in and bailing us out.

TraceyB67: I think I'll have a glass of wine tonight, and I shall toast Alistair Darling for stepping in and bailing us out. Ooooh good idea! What about a synchronised partaking of vino tonight? Anyone else willing to participate? How about a mutually convenient time for us all to open a bottle of wine and toast the fact we did finally receive our money back... x

Hi - Great to see so many familiar names. Yes hard to believe it was a year ago so many of us were parted from our savings, but eventually we were all reunited with our money - well I assume we all were! A toast this evening sounds a great idea - any excuse for a drink!! Lovely to hear what you have been up to over the last year Jacqui. Even getting our money back hasn't helped us, my husband and I are now returning from France, what with the credit crunch, exchange rate and rise in cost of living out there, we can't continue to live out there, I think if we'd been pensioners we'd be better off. Never mind, we did it, don't regret it, made some really super friends and we might do it again when things everywhere improve, we just need to find some work in the UK now, which wont be easy we know. Someone suggested linking up once a year, good idea, just catch up with people and see what has happened in their lives. Good luck to everyone and I reckon 6 o'clock for a "cheers" would be good. Passac

Hi there Jacqui, good to see you. This snippet of info should be right down your street: 21. Aug 2009 - 16:27 Landsbanki´s managers and board members may be sued for damage because of Icesave Iceland´s finance minister, Steingrímur Sigfússon, says the state will possibly sue for damage those who are responsible for the Icesave accounts. This includes the Landsbanki´s managers and board members at the time in question. Such a lawsuit would be based on laws applied to limited companies, where it is stated that founders and board members of a company are bound to compensate any damage the inflict on the company, whether intentionally or by inadvertence. A bill that grants state guarantee to honor the Icesave repayment deal made with Britain and Holland is being discussed in parliament Althingi and will in all likelihood be passed through in a few days. As for the wine, have already drunk too much in the past few days but will be with you in spirit ... Acecard

A very interesting article and excellent news! I hope that Mark Sismey-Durrant is dragged into this. For those who don't remember, he was the Chief Executive of Icesave who bumbled his way through a rather uncomfortable Radio 4 interview three days before the collapse (although the discomfort was only really apparent retrospectively, once Icesave had folded). He categorically assured and reassured the nation that not only was Icesave financially sound, but in the eventuality of a collapse, all depositors funds would be protected. In fact, to quote, he said "'Savers should not be nervous about the state of the bank [Icesave]. We are a robust and well-managed bank." Twenty-four hours later, Icesave's funds was frozen and he had disappeared! Good to see there could be some personal liability charges resulting and that people will not be able to hide behind the protection of vicarious liability. The fact that the managers and board members could still be held liable, even if their actions were deemed inadvertent, means that they may not be able to plead negligence. Hoorah to online wine later. Six o'clock will be the new vino o'clock!! xx
