    You don't have to pay anything to BT. A BT line is one that is owned by BT Wholesale, any work done is by BT Openreach and BT retail don't need to be involved at all. You just pick a voice provider, they get Openreach to do the work and then pass on any charge to you.

    Openreach currently charge £67 + VAT for a new line, providers can then charge you what they like. Post Office standard charge is £110 at the moment - New Lines

    Ok then, yes you could use the existing socket to get Plusnet broadband but the line would need to be active and there may be a charge involved.

    Depending on who you get to activate the line the charge and minimum line rental term will vary. Until recently Plusnet were doing installations for £50.

    But they charge £110 for reconnection if the line is not active???.

    The Post Office will install a new BT line with no minimum term for line rental then you can get anyone you like for broadband.

    And if you get your BT line reconnected you are tied to a min. 12 month contract.

    No, you can't get broadband out of the BT socket unless you also take (pay for) phone service.

    If you don't think the extra cost of the Virgin broadband added to your Virgin cable package is affordable perhaps its the existing "bundle" which is too expensive.

    Thanks I tried VM but they were not at all competative on the price of a package. The problem I have is I only need it 3 months a year so paying 12 months subscriptions is not cost effective at the price they are charging. Thanks again

    Yes if the BT line is no longer in use, you will get charged £130 to reconnect.

    In general Virginmedia broadband should be better than any broadband via your telephone. VM use fibre optic cables which are capable of moving data much quicker than any telephone line.

    Why don't you call VM and see if you can get a deal for a complete package, TV, Phone and Broadband. It may be cheaper than you think.

    Do you research about what other packages may be available e.g BT and Sky. Sometimes if VM are aware that you are considering swtiching to other companies, they are willing to do a deal.

    I use to have my telephone through BT but cancelled this for Virgin cable package.

    I still have the BT phone socket on the wall, can I use this socket if I sign up to Plusnet broadband for example or do I have to pay £130 to get the line installed again. Please help I'm really confused how it all works. Virgin offer broadband but it's too expensive.
