Excellent result! Would keep a beady eye on the bills though. Be sure to keep a note of time/date of call for future reference in case of billing "errors".

Re: I Cant Get My MAC Code From BT!!!

Many thanks for your help again. As it turns out I was leaving BT because they couldnt match my new suppliers price, having told them this they have now lowered theirs by £10 to match what I was going to pay with a new supplier and cancelled my cancellation!! amazing what threatening to leave will do - oh and a free new wireless router!!

    Thanks again.

It would be a case of waiting till your existing broadband has been stopped then signing up with your new supplier. Would be treated as a new connection which sometimes attracts a fee of some sort. Also be aware that you will be charged around £18 for ceasing your existing broadband connection.

Hopefully you managed to stop the cease in time.

Thank you for your help, if this is the case, how do I change service providers? Am I able to if a MAC code doesnt exist?

Re: I Cant Get My MAC Code From BT!!!

Depends on how quick they were to process your cease request. It's not possible to get a MAC if the cease request has already been actioned.

Ofcom's MAC regulations do not apply if there's a cease pending.

Re: I Cant Get My MAC Code From BT!!!

Your post has given me some hope! I rang to cancel my broadband service not knowing I should ask for the mac code first. When I then rang back to get it, a matter of only minutes later, I was told that they do not have a MAC code as I have requested the service to be cancelled in a month's time.

I demanded saying they legally had to, at which point I too was put on hold, and then was promised that they would ring me tomorrow with one as their 'systems were struggling to generate one' - sounds exactly like the treatment Murtz got above!

I have been told they will ring me tomorrow to let me know if they can get a MAC code. As it was my error - cancelling before getting the code - do I have a leg to stand on? do they still have to provide one?

any help would be much appreciated!

Re: I Cant Get My MAC Code From BT!!!

I was just wondering.. Would I get better speeds if I connected to the master socket downstairs using a 5 metre ethernet cable that goes from my PC to the modem.. and a standard broadband cable to connect from the  modem to the master socket...

That would be your best option, that is also probably one of the reasons why you were getting poor speeds on BT , just situate the router/modem as close to the phone line as possible using the shortest length wire, ethernet cables are fine to run all over the house but an ADSL cable will attract background noise as data is transmitted along it. So if i were you i would do that and you might be pleased with the results

Thanks mate.. I havent got a wireless connection at home on my PC.. not really looking to get it either because I've heard negatives about wireless.. and how cables are better.

I might stick with what Ive got right now.. and probably do a few speed tests from the master socket to see the difference

Re: I Cant Get My MAC Code From BT!!!

Er unsure if I was being honest.

With Be make sure you have the best possible connection going between the wireless router and the phone socket - ethernet cable would be good.

Be comes with a Be Box Wireless modem so you won't need to use cables to link to your PC but do make sure that your wireless modem has a very good line of sight to your PC - thus minimising the amount of thick walls etc between it and your PC to maximise the signal strength.

You can tell how good the signal is because it will say good, very good, excellent and optimum - excellent signal strength means it's pretty well as good as you can get.

    I hope this helps?

    Cheers

    Jason

Re: I Cant Get My MAC Code From BT!!!

    I cant wait mate!

Ive got a query though.. no point me creating a new thread!

Ive had broadband for about 5 years now.. and my PC has always been upstairs.. Ive used a standard cable going from my PC to the modem.. and from the modem to the extension socket upstairs.. no extension wires were used.

I was getting speeds that I was happy with (never experienced higher speeds to I didnt really have anything to compare with!).

I was just wondering.. Would I get better speeds if I connected to the master socket downstairs using a 5 metre ethernet cable that goes from my PC to the modem.. and a standard broadband cable to connect from the  modem to the master socket...

Or.. Using a standard ethernet cable to the modem.. and a 5 metre broadband cable to connect the modem to the master socket...

Or.. just leave things as they are  using standards cables to the extension socket?

Which one of these 3 options would give me better speeds? The only reason I didnt use long wires to connect is because I thought that the connection might get lost through the way.

(Also.. should a modem be plugged into the  master socket.. or the test socket behind it?

Re: I Cant Get My MAC Code From BT!!!

I finally got my MAC Code!! After months of torment.. I decided to 'have it out' with the tech team.. I was transferred to the UK Based Tech Team.. 100 times more helpful than the India one.. and I demanded a way out! He checked my notes and saw that I went through every single thing.. and then he put me on hold to have a word with his manager.. and after 20 minutes of holding.. he finally came to me asking me if I was definately wanting to cancel.. and giving him assurance that I wasnt budging.. he said Ok he'll have a word with the options team and all my charges will be waived and I wont be held to term! YES!

But.. I shouldnt have got my hopes up too quickly.. I mean this is BT.. they never make anything straight forward!!.

I get transferred to the options team.. and the person on the other end said 'so you want to end you're contract'.. Im like 'yes please!'.. and then out of nowhere... she says 'ok your broadband has been cancelled'!

I started getting really annoyed because this would mean that Id be without Broadband for about 3 weeks! I said to her 'I asked for a MAC Code why did you cancel it!.. she said 'well from 2 weeks you'll be free to join anyone else'. Obviously this woman didnt know the advantages of a MAC code! So I got transferred to someone else telling them to 'cancel my cancellation'.. they put the request through.. And the following day I rang up again to see if they can generate me a MAC code.. but they still couldnt because the BT Wholesale systems were showing my line as Cancelled!

It goes on!.. I was then put on hold for 25 minutes whilst the options team spoke to wholesale.. and finally they came back to me saying it was an error on the Wholesale's system! And they fixed it.. Finally they were able to generate me a MAC!

I cant believe how awful the BT service is.. you'd think that the company that is incharge of the actual telephone line would at least a decent broadband service!. To be honest.. Im just as shocked that I got out of the service because it seemed like a neverending cycle of me speaking to the off shore tech team!

Thank god my BE Broadband gets activated on Friday :)

Anyone in the same problem as me.. just dont give up.. Make things up if you have to! (I told them that it was interferring with my work because I had to download huge chunks of data to work from from!)

Re: I Cant Get My MAC Code From BT!!!

Hi Murtz, The problem your encountering, is, in my opinion, that Bt are routing all users during this time scale, where there routing it to I don't know (my guess is India) and Bt will not admit that this is so. I stay in Edinburgh Scotland and I'm having the same problem as you are. I'm on Option 3. I've had four engineers call at my house, I've had a new Voyager 200V Hub. I have had an ongoing dialog with a Mr.Faisal Munir in BT High Level Complaints (phone No.08456080023) for the last two and a half months. I keep on e-mailing him snapshots of the speed testers.(the speed tester that Bt offer is the worst as far as speed testers go), it only gives you a through speed not an over all result  This a good tester http://www.speedtest.net/  I've snapped pictures of a dummy file that Mr.Munir  sent me to check my download speed during this time slot. This is the URL http://fuller.zen.co.uk/test/ .for the dummy file download.I just joined this form to post a response to this problem your having as it's the same as my one. You are lucky in a way as you have other Bt users that you can compare line speeds with. If the people that are on Bt and experiencing the same fault gang-up and refuse to pay you bill. Will you please keep me posted on this so we can collaborate on methods how to get this fixed out.I hear that Bt is giving everybody 24 MB in Jan 08

Re: I Cant Get My MAC Code From BT!!!

The engineer has already been round to 'optimise' my house though.. I was promised speeds of 1.7 mb onwards.. and yet im getting something like 0.25mb! This problem started as soon as I switched ISP.. if there is a technical problem surely I would have experienced it with AOL aswell?

Ive just had enough of BT.. and Im trying to get out as much as I can!

Thanks for all the replies Jason, really appreciate it.
