Problem could be that the boiler is faulty and is burning a lot more gas than it needs to. The boiler should come on and go off over the period of time to maintain the temperature it is set to. But if there is a fault, the burners could be continuosly on for the whole period the timer is set for or be on for longer than ideal.

Suggest that you arrange to get the boiler looked at to make sure it is running properly.

Hi. Thank you very much for your reply.

No my heating have not been running 24/7. I would say I used average 12-15 hours a day and night.

Ive got a double convector type of radiators. I think the main problem could be windows. There are old ones, but tight. Also during last severe conditions I put curtains for protection.

The bill is correctly calculated, meter dial says ft^3.

I am really surprised because last year I stayed in a very similar flat (same kind of heating, same kind of windows, simmilar hours of usage) and I got a three month bill (with electricity) for 290 pounds. And the flat was bigger (2bedrm).

    highcontrast:

Still think that 150 pound bill for a month of gas usage is high to much. I just have no clue how to dispute my bill.

Your "102" (100s of) cubic feet from 1/11 to 2/12 is consistent with your 4390kWhr for the following month. While potentially "excessive" it is within the bounds for a central heating boiler running 24/7 in the severe winter conditions just experienced.

So the question is what type of heating do you have, have you been running it 24/7 and how well (or badly) is the flat insulated?

Since you are taking actual meter readings (from an imperial meter) *probably* the bill is correctly calculated. (Important: I take it you checked the meter dial says ft^3, not just the bill?).

If you believe the meter to be inaccurate you are entitled to insist the meter is tested for which you are liable to pay a statutory fee. Be aware that gross meter error is very rare and other explanations should always be looked for first. You should first consider the answer to the heating question and get a handle on your consumption by taking daily readings.

Sorry. I confused you. I meant 70 cubic feet and 102 cubic feet. I should not have used the term "unit" for cubic feet.

I used 70 units (actual units not kWhs

It would be better if your were consistent and didn't switch between "units" and kWhrs.

I haven't a clue what you mean by "units". An imperial meter reads cubic feet (technically 100s of cubic feet). Its much better to reserve the term "unit" for kWhr (for consistency with electricity).

Still not enough (consistent) data to help, except to say your 4389kWh in one month seems excessive unless you are keeping a very badly insulated flat very warm, or growing something.

    Thanks for your reply.

    I have an imperial meter.

    No, my readings were correct.

My previous bill oh it's a long story. Previous tennant was with British Gas Business. My agency did not tell me and I got bill from them which I have complained about. Still have not received anything back yet so I cannot compare. I moved to BG in December.

From June to November I used 70 units (actual units not kWhs). 1st Nov till 2 Dec I used 102 units(same here)

    Thank you

OK. Are you saying you provided actual start and finish readings? Could any figures have been misread? Are the readings on the bill the numbers you provided? How much was the previous bill? Do you have an imperial or metric meter?

You'll guess its impossible to comment without more information.

However it's important to get a handle on your consumption by taking daily readings for a week, then weekly readings for a month.

Huge units usage - 4389 kWh in one month in one bed flat.

Could someone advise me on my gas usage please? Today I received my bill from British Gas for 158.11 pounds. It's from 11 Dec 10 until 11 Jan 2011 so one full month. This bill is actual I gave them readnigs. I have used nearly 4390 kWh over that period. Is seems far too much. I stay in one bedroom flat. I used to pay that amount quaterly in 2 bed flat.

    Thanks for any help

    Marius
