Hi,

I bought a Sony Ericsson with a Pay as you go Virgin Sim card 3 months ago. The phone has a virgin stamp on the bottom of the phone. I am not in a contract but the phone is locked.

I was hoping someone could tell me how I could get it unlocked so that I could also use my T-mobile sim in the phone.

Can I ask Virgin to give me the codes for free?

Are Virgin allowed to keep my phone blocked?

I've now solved the issue!!

Virgin will unlock the phone for free if you use £30 credit and have not broken any of their terms and conditions.

at Part 5(i)......At no additional charge, we will provide the code to 'unlock' your mobile phone, as long as you do not owe anything for that phone, you have spent at least £30 on airtime with us on that phone and you have complied with terms of this agreement. You will need to register that phone with us for security reasons....

I recall seeing something similar in the terms & conditions for a Tesco phone.

Some phones can be unlocked for free using one of the code generators on the web but these work for some models only, particularly Nokias. Some phones just need a code, others need a gadget plugging in to them.
