Odd, I can home today and checked the router and it's now on 16 mb. No idea what happened but It's all fine now and I have had no real problems with sky broadband

Re: How to check my speed?

Yeah, I would be happy with 8 mb anyway but seeing as I'm paying for 16 and think I should be getting 16 then I will call them up.

Wizard Of Oz:It isn't really that I'm getting half of that. In the router statistics, my downstream value is at 8000 kb. But I can see no reason for it being like that, everything I have checked just suggests that they haven't put me on adsl2 so I'll give them a call and ask them to do that.

Well the max speed of a 8mb connection is 8192kb so if they have put you on 8mb thats a good speed. If you should have 16mb then I would imagine you will get pretty much the top speed you can get. Probably is best to give them a call and ask them whats going on.

Wizard Of Oz:well, i have just checked all my information out and it seems that I should be ok for the full connection with no caps, but I have been capped at about 8000kb down and 400 up. I think I'll have to call sky about that and get it sorted

This maybe the fastest speed your line can handle. If you dont mind parting with your postcode I can tell you how far you are from your exchange. This would give you a basic idea of how much your line can handle. As a reference you lose about 2mb per mile of cabling from your exchange. If you dont live near your exchange then this would explain the drop in speed.

I have checked myself how far I am from the exchange. It's a whopping 300 metres. But if you can double check to make sure that my exchange is that far then go ahead. My postcode is SE19 3DE.
Another reason why I think I can go higher is that my line attenuation for downstream is 16db and for upstream it's 11.7, which just says to me that I am very close to the exchange.

Yup: 325m from the exchange. Thats obviously straight line distance, if you take the cabling into account it will be a little longer. Still if you are on a 16mb connection you shouldnt be getting half that, you will likely at that distance get 15 - 15.5mb not 8!

Re: How to check my speed?

Arn't ya supposed to be informed of the max speed when you apply for sky broadband? Their website should tell you this info and if it doesn't then I'm sure that ringing tech support will allow them to tell you what the survey came up with. This is often done when someone applies for broadband access

Also make sure you are on the max package when you ring. Asking them should be able to get an answer as well.

Hmm, sounds a bit strange, but yeah, give them a ring and see how it fairs. Hope you get your issue resolved quickly and timely

Re: How to check my speed?

If you are getting jumpy speed configs, then just make sure you leave the equipment on for a while and don't panic if the connection seems to jump about or drop. Simply power cycle (switch the router off for about a minute then switch it back on) and then see what kind of connection your getting.

Please remember though that other factors can and will affect your speed, such as ext cables and whether or not your using the Master socket.

It's also known that new connections should take about 3 days to settle. Once this has passed and your still not happy with the constant connection speed's jumping over the place just ring and explain these issues. Even though You will be asked about some of the things I've covered here, it's just needed to ensure that if the issue is passed onto Tier 2 or 3, that they have this information to hand to help you in getting your issue resolved quicker.

    Hope this helps.

Re: How to check my speed?

Yes you are probably best waiting for 7 days from your connection date before you give sky a call. Its likely as well that your speed will drop during the day because the network will likely be at its busiest.

Re: How to check my speed?

I ran a speedtest early this morning when I first set up the router and was getting about 5-6 when it was first set up. Now I'm getting about 2mbs. From what I have read that is normal as the speed might be jumping around a bit while the router finds its best settings. I might do the calling sky technical support thing although judging by most peoples experiences that might not be too useful.

Re: How to check my speed?

Right, first things first. Your running with a wireless connection shouldn't affect a speed test. Theres 2 ways you can go about this...

First is to goto http://myspeed.visualware.com/uk/index.html and run a test from there. This might prove useful for seeing how good a service your actually getting. There are other sites out there as well, so it could be worth your while to google for them and see what they say if you feel that your question isn't being answered.

Second option is to contact the Sky technical support and ask if they can test from there to see what kind of speed you are getting at that moment as you feel your connection speed is a little slow.
