Re: How long is a debt valid for?

Hi there, this company dont know for certain that its you they are looking for.

The letter is speculative - someone with your name owes moeny and they know what someone with that name lives at your address. What you need to decide is if it is you that they are looking for, are your prepared to pay this money back? If you cant remember it its likely to be a small amount and I doubt they will demand it all back in one go. If you call, you need to be confident and say this is how much I can afford per week/month and dont try to negotiate too much. The other option is to ignore it! The other option is to get a credit report on your last address and see if there are any negative remarks - this may give you and indication of who it is looking for you and how much they want.

Re: How long is a debt valid for?

i would like to know the answer to that . I have just moved back to the uk after 2 yrs of living in Europe. And received a letter today from mackensie hall. Asking if i lived at this property could i ring them and if im not that person if i know of there whereabouts to ring them and all info will be treated in confidence. Im now scared to ring these people incase they demand whatever debt i owe them straight away and not even sure what debt it is about as far as i know i dont owe anyone any money that is out standing and havent been imformed that a debt i have has been passed on to a debt collecting agency. Can u please help and give me advice on how to handle them if i do phone them. many thanks!!!

My understanding is that it is six years after the last contact or payment. So, if you got a letter six months ago and hear nothing more for five and a half years, you're in the clear.

If the debt relates to excessive bank charges, you may be able to dispute the amount.

How long is a debt valid for?

In 2001 i had a bank account with barclays it was closed due to the fact i owed 400 pound and could'nt afford to pay them, I am still receiving letters from debt collection companies, I read somewhere that a debt can only last for so many years before the creditor as to write it off is this true?

    thanks.
