I would advise to have contents for the both properties insured by the same Insurer, even if there are companies that will offer separate cover. Reason: Contents can be shared between properties, i.e Laptops, bike etc. Imagine the claims hassle you're going to have if your laptop get nicked at the property it's not insured at?

Second Homes, Towergate insurance will do this, you should be able to find a local(ish) broker or you can call them direct.

Also, Hickster is right, you need to check your current policy as they may be uncomfortable with you spending more than 28 days total, away from your main residence in a year.

Ocaso http://www.ocaso.co.uk/ also do home, second home and unoccupied property policies, so you might want to speak with them. We put a forces personnel with them because their homes are unoccupied on and off for differing periods.

Normally you have to arrange cover through the Insurers of your main residence. If they won't provide cover, then move the Insurance for both properties to a company that will offer cover. Most companies will offer cover for both properties, but not the second home in isolation.

In regard to your main residence, if this will only be occupied at weekends, because you are away, the Insurers may wish to apply terms and conditions. This will relate to the security of the property and to other precautions to prevent loss, e.g. leaving the heating on to maintain a certain temperature to avoid burst pipes.

In order to arrange cover in this situation, you will normally have to arrange by phone, as most companies internet sites do not cater for this. Though having said this, there may be some specialist second home Insurance providers if you do a google for second home Insurance.

If you do arrange Insurance for the second home elsewhere, you should contact the main residence Insurers if the main home will be regularly unoccupied.

    House insurnace - second home

Anybody got any ideas where I can get contents insurance for a second residential home ? I've tried the comparison tool but after ringing the best 4 up find that none of them will cover a second (mainly weekday occupied) property. I've asked a broker but the person there who usually deals with these type of enquiries is on holiday !

    Any ideas ????

Also should I tell the insurers of our first / main residence that we've got a second place ?
