    Home Contents Insurance

I am a tenant and the ladlord has insured the property. However, I wish to take our content insurance ONLY for the elelctronic and other valuable items I have. Is there a way for me to buy just that? Also, are there any contents insurance policies that cover my electronic items like Plasma TV against malfunction? I ask this as an allternative to buying 5 year product cover for around GBP 250!

All contents policies come with some sort of basic cover and then valuables get added to that. A contents policy might cover your TV for accidental damage but not for other malfunction. Normal maintenance does require an extended guarantee type of policy or a maintenance contract but I agree with you that these are all too expensive to be worthwhile - the cost is normally more than a used replacement would cost and most electricals that get through the first year trouble free tend to keep on like that for 10 years or more. The last time I was offered one, it was for a phone and the cost over one year was more than the cost of the phone, but the salesman insisted that this was ok because I wouldn't notice the payments being taken by weekly direct debits!

There are lots of such schemes. But the existence of such a scheme wont necessarily mean a better quote. All you can do is shop around and, if you don't expect to claim, reduce the amount of cover that you are paying for.
