    Sarah1802:

We have given the meter readings ourselves as their estimates were £19.

Why did you do that? It's the meter readings you need to correct, not the £££s of a bill.

In the absence of a single meter reading in your post there is nothing to rule out the most likely scenario, one or more of a combination of estimated readings, wrong readings, high/low rate readings being confused, the time clock being stuck, the initial readings(s) being wrong.

Meter error (other than the time clock being stuck) is the least likely explanation.

You need to examine your bill(s) more closely for evidence of estimated readings. Does the meter serial number stated on the bill(s) agree with the serial number on the meter? Are the readings on the most recent bill close to the readings on the meter. Are the high/low rate readings the right way round?

You will learn little by switching everything off. You should restore everything and get a handle on your normal consumption by taking daily readings for a week, weekly readings for a month and then ensure estimated readings on future bills are accurate.

For the benefit of others always do that when you move in to a new property, making sure you pass the initial readings to the supplier and ensure the readings you pass appear on your first bill.

You should follow the meter readings every day for a few days and check that the reference number on the meter matches the bills. It's heating and air conditioning that will use most of the power so I would expect the usage to drop drastically if they aren't being used but £100 per month isn't that unusual.

It sounds like you have tested the meter but another useful test is to turn everything off except one appliance, like a 1kw heater without a thermostat, and see if the meter moves correctly. It should record 1 unit for each full hour that a 1kw appliance is on, You should also check that the meter records day units during the day, night units at night and that the storage heaters are connected to the night meter.

The supplier will not help unless you are certain (rather than just thinking that it's a possibility) that the meter is faulty.

    High Electricity Bill -Scottish Power

    Hi,

Myself and my partner moved into a 1 bed flat last november. We are Electric only and on Economy 7.

At the end of our first quarter we were suprised to get a £320 electric bill. Assuming it must have been a mix of storage heaters, air con and a portable radiator, we swtiched all of these off at the mains box and have for the last three months had no heating whatsoever - duvet on the sofa/ wearing extra layers instead. This week we have received our second bill for Feb to April. This time the bill came in at £360.

We havent used any heating in the last 3 months, yet our bill is even higher this time! We have given the meter readings ourselves as their estimates were £19. Neither of us can understand where this electric is being used. Our bill shows that we have used over 3000KWh in the past quarter. I have phoned Scottish Power numerous times this week and am just being told that this is a normal price. After speaking wher people who have got electric only homes, including the guy who lives in the flat above us (he is only paying £116 a quarter in a flat the same as ours, same appliances, heaters, etc) it is obvious that this is well out.

Yesterday morning we unplugged all appliances, read the meter, and read it again later and it hadnt changed, so it doesnt look like the electric is being leaked out somewhere else. We are both at our wits ends now, it seems as if we are going to have to just pay it. Scottish power wont send anybody out either. There is only two of us living here, we both work 40 hours a week and have no huge appliances, no tumble dryer, dishwasher etc that could be using it. Any Idead?

Iv also got a portable monitor that i can plug into each appliance, done this on everything and there is nothing that can be draining the electric so quickly.

    Any help appreciated!
