Re: HELP! believe energy consumption must be wrong

I think it is excessively high - we are using nearly 4 times the number of units you use. We are 3 adults in 4 bedroomed semi.

We have Gas for central heating and hot water and hob on cooker.(electric oven) The hot water is on thermostat on all day ( as I found its cheaper running it this way as husband works shifts so need hot water at odd times) but the central heating is on timer and thermostat of 15C.

We were paying £85 per month for Gas and £85 for Elec - its the recent hike in charges that has put the monthly bill up to

£95 for elec and £130 for Gas. which means our annual costs will be £1560 for Gas and £1140 for Elec = £2700

per year!!!!!! Surely thats too much for 3 people in a normal sized house.

I would say that 18-24 units per day for electricity is slightly high but not excessively - we use on average 6 per day (2 of us in a 3 bed semi) but we are extremely careful with useage (no tumble drier/dishwasher)

I would be more concerned about your gas - what do you have your central heating thermostat set to ?

Do you have it on a timer or on 24/7

HELP! believe energy consumption must be wrong

    Hi Scott

Just received quarterly bills from EDF for both Gas and Electricity. We pay monthly direct debit (self read) and were paying £85 per month for Gas and £85 per monnth for Elec. For some time had been worrying about how high this was as other people seem to be paying lot less. When the meter read man came I asked him what average consumption was and he said approx 10 - 12 units per day. Concerned that meter might be faulty, I monitored electricity consumption for a month and discovered that on average we use 21 per day ( 18 - 24 variation). The bill has confirmed this.

Have just received latest bills which include the increases. Horrified to see that EDF are increasing our monthly DD to £95 for Elec and to £130 for Gas!!!!!!.. Will be a struggle to pay these.

We have a 3 storey victorian semi detached house, 3 adults quite a lot of TV's and computers, . Usual appliances, Washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher etc. But normal useage of these.

Do you think our meter could be faulty? how do I go about getting this checked out?

All Advice and comments much appreciated.
