Hello,
You are not the only one to wonder if your gas / electric usage is on the High side.
BUT there are a lot of things to take into consideration
!/ How your premises are insulated ie minimum through to maximun will determine how much of your heat is lost through the walls and windows also doors and roof.
2/ Older buildings often can not be fully insulated without spending a lot of money, but you will save it in the long term.
3/ Even with good insulation your consumption of gas for heating will depend on where about your thermostat is situated
I E in the coldest part of the home will cause the boiler to run for longer therefore using more gas. the same applies if you have an older or more inefficient boiler or it has not been serviced recently >> note this could be a danger as fumes could be present <<< also if your cooker is not running efficiently it will also use more gas.
4/ Also the temperature at which you set your thermostat will have a great bearing on your consumption as even just
ONE degree over a period of time will make a big difference as the boiler will fire up more often, the higher the the stat is set.it is not just the lengh of time that the central heating is turned on but also the temperature at which it is set.
IF YOU ARE NOT SURE WHETHER OR NOT YOUR BOILER IS RUNNING CORECTLY THEN PLEASE CONTACT YOUR GAS SUPPLY COMPANY AND ASK THEM IF THEY CAN RECOMEND A SUITABLE GAS SAFTY PERSON TO CALL AND CHEK OUT THE BOILER.
IF YOU ARE A TENANT EITHER PRIVATE OR COUNCIL OR HOUSING ASSOCIATION / AUTHOURITY YOUR LANDLORD IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFTY OF YOUR BOILER.
IF YOU ARE THE OWNER OF THE PREMISES YOU MAY NEED TO CALL A GOOD GAS FITTER I E ((>CORGI REGISTERED<)) AND PAY A FEE FOR THEM TO CHECK OUT THE BOILER AND THE COOKER. THEY COULD JUST NEED A CLEAN AND ADJUST TO MAKE ALL WELL.
Just so that you know that I am telling you this correctly I am an retired heating and ventilating engineer.
I feel the cold very easily myself so I know How awkward it can be to try to keep warm AND keep the bills down at persent I spend around £300-00 per year just to heat my two bedroom flat as there is only me here, I cook by electric and my water is heated by electric. Just for the record I am with N Power for both gas and electric.
I hope that I have been able to give you some usefull information to help you to sort out your dillema.
