    Gas bill mix-up

    Hi,

I've lived in my house (bought it as a new build) for 6 years and until now assumed I had been paying for gas & electricity together (somewhat naively I now realise). I've recently recieved a bill from a gas supplier for the last years worth of gas. I contacted them as the estimated readings were way out (over) and discovered they thought I had moved into the house last year. They are seemingly looking into what might have happened here but I am concerned they are now going to backdate the gas bill for 6 years! Does anyone know if this is possible, am I liable for being blissfully ignorant or is it their responsibility for getting the billing incorrect??
    Can anyone help or advise?

I suggest contacting Energywatch (http://www.energywatch.org.uk/index.asp), but I think they can only backdate for 12 months.
