Yes I think you should phone to discuss and perhaps follow up with something in writing. This is pretty typical of government information, where their forms are unintelligible to most people. You need to speak to someone from the tax office to understand how their systems work.

I remember my dad having a backdated tax issue and he wrote to them about it, which just caused unnecessary correspondence, taking it no further forward. I think he eventually had to phone them to sort it out.

Sadly it's my fault. Apparently you have to submit by 31 December if you want tax taken from you paye code. I submitted on 3rd January. At no point on the Return does it tell you this - it is on the "further notes" which is a separate link. Great.

I have had to come to an arrangement with them.

Although she has said that I should ring HMRC and explain I'm no longer renting as they've set aside £3,421 rental income for 2012-13 and my tax code reflects that but I'm no longer renting and haven't been since June 2011.

Any thoughts on that? I was going to write to them but have been advised ringing would be better.

Another HMRC c*ck up I would expect.

Just give them a call to find out what they are up to. Normally if there is some backdated tax required due to a mistake, if you give them a call to discuss this, they will come to an arrangement with you. If you have already had your tax code changed to collect the back tax, then I expect it is just a mistake on their records.

Final Demand from HMRC out of blue

I did my tax return online on time. It's the second one I have done. Tax is to be taken from my PAYE code

Got home yesterday and find final demand for full amount or it will go to debt collection. It's dated 10 feb yet I've only received yesterday. I've checked my return and at no point did I indicate that I was paying directly.

I rented my flat out in 2010-2011 and now am back living there.

I'm totally confused. I've had no other correspondence regarding this. All I have had from them is a letter changing my tax code with immediate effect because the rental income from 2009-2010 was not taken due to my last firm using wrong tax code. Then I received another new tax code for use from April 2012-13.

Any advice please. I intend to call them today.

I'm glad I'm no longer renting a property out. This is for 2010/11.
