I'd consider doing a pass plus test if you havent already.

I got quoted £1400 from norwich union, the cheapest I could find. But I told them I was doing pass plus, they said as soon as I'd got my reference number they'd change the price of the cover down to £800 and refund me the difference.. which they did!

    Hope that helps,

    Nick

    Sadly this happens.

I passed my driving test when I was 23. Insurance for the first year was £1800, 2nd year £900 and this year it was £450. It drops quite quick although the big drop was likely because I hit 25 rather than how long I have been driving.

Re: Excessively high insurance on a 1 litre swift?!?!?

Age and Area are really the main factors to what your going to be paying,, them prices quoted on that car are ridiculous tho...

I passed my test in January this year being 17, insured my first car on my own policy which is a 1.6 mk4 astra worth just over three grand, and my insurance has only cost me 1400 for the year paying monthly which has worked out to 120 a month!

I found tho that working full time brings the price of quotes down, so maybe that you are a student is bringing your prices up,, plus as the hints show when filling in the quote forms adding another driver can bring policys down, infact adding my mum as a named driver to my policy brought my insurance down by over £400

Although i am buying a new car later this month which is a BMW 318 Motorsport Edition, trying to insure this at 18 with 1 years no claim is strugling hard, considering the size of engine isnt much more, the cost of car is around the same and ive not moved house etc the quotes i am recieving are around 1800 upwards

Tis going up with a years no claim is strange, but as someones said, the fact i am now legal to drink makes me more of a risk driving and therefore i can see the logic in the prices!

Maybe selling your car and buying one which you can find cheap insurance on as you have said about the fiesta is your way forward, dont try to struggle getting your car on the road! I was working part time when i first got my car, could afford insurance and minimum petrol... you wont realise how much cars cost in repairs for usual consumables such as Tyres.

And dont fool yourself, you will be on the road, your bound to have a tiny little bump or scrape with something, maybe even a gentle reverse into something that could leave a ding on your car... and if your cars mint, you will be paying out to have that fixed because you feel so bad about it!

Id want to be earning about 2.5times what im paying in insurance so that i can pay for it while still enjoying my social life, not worrying about any little hickups with the car and the fact petrol prices are increasing rapidly...

Anyway gone off topic alot, so ill end it here, tho i hope the start helps alot! Quinn Direct and Liverpool Victoria almost certainly come cheapest with the largest percentage of young people :D

    Swifty

Have you tried looking at our guide to motor insurance? There are several tips to get the premium lower, for example, adding an older parent or relative as a named driver, parking in a garage at night, keeping the mileage low, making sure that you have a thatcham approved immobiliser will all help bring the cost down. Also, (being fair to insurance companies for a second), ask yourself this, would anyone you know accept £1,800 off you and then cover you for any accident, bump, chip, knock or scrape and cover the replacement of your car and compensation for anyone that you hit or replace thier property for a full 12 months!! A sobering thought. Especially when a very high % of younger drivers have an acccident in thier first few years of driving.

well dont bother then cos you will also have to fork out for petrol, road tax and any general repairs.

leave it till you got a full time job.

Re: Excessively high insurance on a 1 litre swift?!?!?

Yeh ok I suppose it makes sense. It's just when everyone asks how much I've been quoted and I say 1800 they're like WHAA! And tell me they got it for only like 800 or something, that's all that makes me worried and feel it's a bit unfair. I've tried quotes for bigger cars like a 1.25 fiesta and it actually goes down to around 1400 :/ My bro's not actually passed his test yet but I don't know what type of license he was putting when he got quotes. Looks like I'm gonna have to just go for it and cope. First deposit of about 340 then 150 a month. I only earn about 200 a month as I'm in full time education! It's gonna suck me dry...

Re: Excessively high insurance on a 1 litre swift?!?!?

SWIFTY...im afraid area and age really do matter...if you combined the two risks often it can workout expensive depending on which area you live in..you must understand your at the minimum legal age for driving..not had your licence for even a year yet,so you as a person are in the highest risk band for insurance even on a little car.

How long has your brother had his licence??..even if he has only just passed his test he is older than you so is slightly less of a risk but  as he is under 21 he is still high risk too.

A lot of companys will not touch 17 year olds nowadays and the ones that do will quote excessive prices as you are too high risk.

Re: Excessively high insurance on a 1 litre swift?!?!?

I'm 17, passed my test 31st October. I didn't think the area was much to do with it as I don't know anyone else around here getting huge quotes like my brother is 20 he's getting quotes for a 1 litre fiesta for about £800. Can my age really affect it by another £1000? I've had no convictions of any kind either, and to give you a list of the companies I've tried would be almost impossible lol I must of tried over 100 by now including all the big names everyone recommends, plus almost every site you're given when you type 'cheap insurance quote' into Google. Elephant was one of the ones that gave me prices between 3 and 5000 ?!?!?!

Re: Excessively high insurance on a 1 litre swift?!?!?

swifty how old are you??..your age could be the main reason you are getting really high quotes, also what area do you acutally live in cos at the risk of sounding offensive you could live in a high risk area.

do you have any convictions or claims before you passed you test.

what places have you tried already, then i can advise you where else to search.

Excessively high insurance on a 1 litre swift?!?!?

Right, I've come here as a final plee for help as I'm having aweful trouble getting a quote low enough on my 1 litre 3 door v reg suzuki swift! The cheapest I've found is no less then £1800 and that's from quinn, who almost everyone says are the cheapest! I've tried hundreds on the net and haven't found anything lower, some go over 3-4k!! I just can't understand why it's so high as it's only a 1 litre! I know friends and family that have insured bigger engines for less than a grand, so it's really irritating why I cant! I'm in full time education and only have 1 part time job so it would be so hard to afford 1800 which works out about 150 a month!! Please somebody tell me why this car is so high to insure and if there are any ways i can get it cheaper? As I'm totally CONFUSED.com!! I've passed my test and this is the only thing in the way now. It will be locked in a garage, and I don't think I live in a bad area. Thanks!!
