Excess charges for change of address

I bought car insurance ,I was to shift in three weeks .I got quotes for new and old address ,and selected the cheapest option. When I changed my address address I am being asked to pay £279 more than the quote I had for new address. The previous quote was not valid as it was after 30 days of thequote.I have new quotes for different companies for new address which are cheaper than the revised quote my original company by £300 .I find this excessive and unjust.

Can I cancel the insurance now and go for another company ,and what are the charges for it? Can anyone tell me what to do now?

Re: Excess charges for change of address

£30 or £40 is normal for changing address which I think is too much. Sometimes they add a bit extra for higher risk areas but £279 is rediculous. Obviously it's too late now but it's usually best to coordinate a move notification with the end of a policy, if possible. When I did this, my insurer wanted to add on £40 so I just renewed with someone else instead.

You can cancel your insurance policy at any time but you will have to pay for the part of the policy that you used plus an admin charge which can be quite expensive.

Does anyone know the cancellation charges for car insurance within 6 weeks of the policy.I would rather get a new policy as it is £350 less than the original policy provider . thanks

It depends on the insurer. You will usually be charged upto £35 for cancellation and the amount of time on cover, minus loss of agent's commission where applicable.

Cheapest option is not always best !
