Unfortunately you cannot open a UK account without a UK address and a visit to a branch. It will be possible for you to open an "offshore" account in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, but these do not tend to pay much interest.

Depending on your attitude to risk, you can consider equities (either US or UK, as you prefer). There are many companies and investment trusts with a good record of paying dividends where yields are above 3%. Of course, the capital value of shares will fluctuate.

Ex Pat looking for high savings interest

I am a UK Citizen who has been living in the US for 8 years now. I have at least $10,000 - possibly $40,000 to save. US "savings" accounts have practically no interest attached to them (less than 1% it seems) so I was wondering whether I can legally save some money in a UK account and take advantage of some of these accounts offering 3-4% - does anyone know? Or maybe there is an even better option in a Swiss bank or Jersey offshore account etc for me?
