    Dry cleaning ruined!

I put a Reiss jumpsuit into a drycleaners which they have ruined beyond repair. The dry cleaner is insisting they have cleaned it in accordance with the manufacturers instructions, and are sending a letter to confirm this. What are my options? Thank you in advance.

With these situations you normally get into arguments, between the drycleaners and clothing manufacturer.

What I would suggest that you do is first of all get in touch with Reiss and see whether they can help. It depends on when you purchased the item, but if there is any evidence of the item not being of merchantable quality, then you should be able to get a refund, if you returned the item under the Sale of Goods act. If the dry cleaners are certain they followed the cleaning instructions and you cannot prove otherwise, perhaps the materials or cleaning instructions are faulty. Is this the first time you had the jumpsuit cleaned? For consumer advice you could also contact consumer direct http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/

These are the contact details for Reiss.

    Email: client.care@reiss.co.uk
    phone: 0845 269 9845
    Monday to Friday 8:30am - 6:00pm
    Saturday 8:30am - 4:30pm

If you have had the Jumpsuit cleaned before and there was not an issue, this would indicate perhaps that there was nothing wrong with the materials. It was an issue with the cleaning. If this is the case, find out if the cleaners are members of the TSA or other trade body. If so, you may be able to ask for an independent inspection of the Jumpsuit. I have come across this before and the cleaners had to pay compensation for a damaged item. See http://www.tsa-uk.org/

In regard to any Insurance you might have, as you may know, you are not covered under Home Insurance for damage caused during the process of cleaning. However, if you took out the legal expenses option, this may help you exercise your consumer rights if you encounter any difficulties.
