    Re: Disappointment after father's death

I understand what you are saying about declaring medical conditions, but my father was not one of the party taking the holiday.

It is impractical to list every close relative who may have a medical condition. Just try and think about the people in your life who would make you cancel your holiday if they became ill or died. Then look t how many could be considered having any type of medical condition or take medcation.

To be expected to quote everyone when you boo your holiday is unreasonabe. No other insurance I can find requires this.

Thanks for your reply, most appreciated.

    Hi Veltins,

Sorry to hear about your loss, especially as it was so unexpected.

There should be more regulation when it comes to travel insurance. They are required to ask about medical conditions in order to assess what might be the correct package for you, and charge an additional premium for any higher risk persons travelling. I'm no expert in this line of insurance, but medical questions are usually always asked when you obtain quotations over the telephone. On the internet, or even in the shop, they might hand you a form and ask you to sign. What with the excitement of it all, sometimes things can be overlooked.

I appreciate where you are coming from on this entirely, but I do feel your trip to the Ombudsman might be a wasted effort, although I hope otherwise.

    Good luck!

    Disappointment after father's death

Has anyone else had a problem with claiming their holiday costs when a close relative became seriously ill/died.

My father was taken seriously ill the night before we were to fly to Mexico, and died soon after. This was a sudden illness which quickly deteriorated and there was no way we could take the flight.

Everone from his doctor, consultant, etc. were agreed that there should no problem claiming and a gave letters for the insurance company.

We even rebooked, while the claim was in, using a credit card, as wewere so confident.

Imagine our shock when the claim was turned down quoting a section in their policy which meant that, as my father, like a large number of people, had a medical condition, had prescribed medicine although not related to his final illness.

I bought the insurance along with my holiday from First Choice and was their top line insurance, when claiming we had to caim from Europ Assistance. We asked for the claim to be reconsidered but to no avail and it is now in the hands of the Financial Ombudsman.

I have checked other insurances and have yet to find another with this clause in their holiday curtailment section.

Please be careful and avoid Euop Assistance or at least check for this, it is unreasonable and quite heartbreaking.
