Re: Credit cards - close or keep?

    Hi

Thank you so much for this. I have called and called, requested call backs from a manager or customer relations, sent letters by recorded delivery and still haven't had a letter from Vodafone admitting it was their error (despite being promised this when I called). I have actually added a notice of correction onto my credit file and I believe the credit reference agency will contact Vodafone directly but I will forward the emails detailing what happened to you tonight when i get home. I also have copies of the letters etc I can fax if needed.

    thanks

    Kerry

    Hi Keri83,

I completely understand how important it is to have everything in order before applying for a mortgage and I would be more than happy to look into your default with Vodafone. I can't guarantee that I will be able to get the default removed for you. However, our team will help you as much as we can.

If you would like to speak to us about this and see what we can do for you, please feel free to contact our team via -

    Keri83:

Very difficult to say. I suggest you speak with an independent mortgage adviser to get an idea what sort of mortgage offer you might get for your earnings and LTV.

Regarding the credit cards, be aware that £3500 0% only being paid off at minimum (if that is what you are doing) might not look good on a search. I can't say whether closing down the £3500 will benefit your applcation but in general I think you should aim to have the credit limit you need.

Re: Credit cards - close or keep?

Thanks very much for your reply.

I have 3 cards. One is very close to it's limit on a 0% basis until next July - £3500 with Barclaycard. I also have a virgin card with a £700 credit limit and a halifax card (my current account provider) with a £3500 credit limit - both of these have nothing outstanding on them. I'm wondering then if I should cancel the Halifax one but retain the Virgin one since its only £700 and would have less impact on the total credit limit you're referring to?

    Thanks again

    Keri

    Keri83:

Are you saying you have two credit cards, or more than two credit cards, two of which have been paid off?

I would say always have two or three credit cards and keep them ticking over. Particularly while you have the default problem its better to keep what you have. However be aware that an unecessarily high total credit limit will count against further credit (including your mortgage), as will the default.

Credit cards - close or keep?

    Hi there,

I have two credit cards I have managed to pay off. I don't have a good credit rating due to a 'default' applied in error by vodafone which I'm currently trying to have removed. I'd really appreciate some advice to say whether it'll look better on my credit file to have these cards open but with no outstanding balance or if it's best to just close them. I'm going to need to apply for a mortgage on my own in about three months time so want to improve my credit score any way I can before then.

    thanks
