Re: credit card for discharged bankrupt??

Your credit rating will be shot for 6 years from the date you went bankrupt and I doubt anyone will give you a card in that period. I'd also ask why you want a good credit rating if you've just escaped from bankruptcy ? Surely you'd be better to keep away from credit altogether and stick to cash. Save for the major itmes so that you can pay cash for them when the time comes.

A mortgage would be a different matter though and that will need a substantial deposit as you'll always have to declare that you've been bankrupt even 30 years from now.

pre-paid cards do not help your credit rating which deters from the point of my original posting

Re: credit card for discharged bankrupt??

I know this forum thread is old... but for anyone finding it via Google, etc....

Pre-paid cards (like the CashPlus Mastercard) are okay and great for passing money to people overseas. But watch out for the way the amex, visa & mastercard "pre-auth" system works. When you check in to a hotel they will swipe your card and pre-auth (resurve) a sum of money from your account. This uses up credit (i.e. your money). When you check out they will put the correct ammount on your card (normally more). This 2nd (final) transaction will be for the full amount including the amount already resurved. So you have now been charged twice. The 2nd tx should cancel out the pre-auth, but for many complex reasons this rarely works! After a few weeks the pre-auth will "time-out" and the resurved funds will come back into your account, leaving only the real 2nd tx amount as being taken from you as you'd expect. It's just you are out of pocket for the pre-auth (resurve) amount for a period of time AND you need enough cash to be loaded on your card at the start to cover BOTH the pre-auth and the real final amount. There's no easy way around this, as it's the way the credit card system was designed. If you have a real credit card or a debit card on an account with an overdraft you will not notice this - although you may notice a difference between the available & actual balances on your statements. Note, pre-auths are also used at places like pay-at-pump petrol stations, online purchases, etc. The issue is where the pre-auth (resurved) amount is different to the final tx amount.

Its not a credit card it's a pre-paid card and you have to load it with your money to be able to use it. It is for people who are unable to get debit cards. You can search for these using Moneysupermarket.com

Firstly I think the only credit card you will get is sky high interest, if they would even allow you one at all therefore it would immediately be not worth it. Secondly, it would take years to repair your credit rating that way. I would personally forget about credit cards and BE GLAD YOU DONT HAVE ONE!!! I dont and never would have one even though I have good credit! Good luck ! :)

I dont want a credit card to go on shopping spree's.

Just to make a few small transactions a month that i can clear on the 1st statement. Just to try and prove I am able to repay and on time to try and improve my credit rating. Or is this not necessary?

    credit card for discharged bankrupt??

    Hi all,

There are a number of lenders on this website who offer credit cards with persons of adverse credit record. Some are obviously more lenient than others.

Has anyone been discharged from bankruptcy and successfully obtained 1? If so, which card have you got?

I need to rebuild some form of credit history but don't want to blindly apply as failed application do have an effect on your overall credit score.

Any replies would be much appreciated
