I have recently moved to Luxembourg for work until August next year and will be splitting my time between here and the UK. I still have an address in London and the UK car i recently purchased is registered at this address. The car will be coming back to the UK at least every 3 months or so. I am looking to get insurance but although some of the providers quote up to 180 days in Europe it also asks to confirm that the car is 'normally' kept at my home address (i.e. in the UK). If anyone has any experience of what the best thing to do is i would be grateful. I would prefer not to 'export' the car unless absolutely necessary.

I think that in view of the fact you are returning in August, you should take normal UK Insurance. Before you sign up, make sure that they will give you a 'green card' for each three months you will be away. Then just before you depart the UK each time, ask for another 'green card'.

By 'green card' I refer to a card which used to be green. This gives you fully comp cover in European countries. If you don't ask for one, you will only have the minimum legally required cover in the relevant country.

What james below says is correct...but I am finding that most insurers will only provide 90 days with the whole insurance policy period..ie one year.

I am in the same boat and am in Italy. My insurance runs out in 7 days and I can't get anyone to insure me as I am not viewed as living in the UK!! Also, another thing to consider, some compnaies do offer an annual Green card, but again there is a problem. They tend to not be UK based and therefore, you will not be able to apply for Road Fund Tax Disc if it expires while you are away!!! And i thought it was called a European UNION!!

If you are over 50 years young, Saga insurance offer unlimited European cover on their policies as standard comprehensive cover, the motor insurance certificate doubles as the Green card. Must stress though your place of normal residence has to be the UK. !

Ecar allow unlimited european cover if car is registered to uk address. OR

www.andrewcopeland.co.uk offer unlimited stay in france but can only come back to UK for total of 28 days in total in 1 year.

They may offer other countries.

We are also trying to find companies that allow more than 90 days.

i have since found out that as long as the car is registered to a UK address, More Than will insure you with an annual Green Card. I have taken out fully comp insurance for c.£400.00.
