Re: Pre paid credit cards
Each provider is different - the ones I see cropping up a lot recently are CashPlus, ClearCash, Bread and Tuxedo.
Each is priced differently and depends on what use you will get out of it.
If lots of transactions and withdrawals, go for one that doesnt charge for this (or if they do, one that charges minimal - normally the ones with monthly fees are better here)
If for odd use, avoid the monthly fee ones and get one that charges fees on transactions...Bread is a good example here
Hope this helps!

Re: Cash Plus are the cheapest for heavy users
I've just read this thread, and to be honest, I've not had any problems with getting or using my crewcard. Customer services seems to be a little suspect though, this I will agree on.
However, I have been trying to log in to my account online for the last few days to check my account and credit more funds but the web site is not available. None of it. Doing a google search i have found a financial statement about the company from 2007 and things were not looking good back then, so maybe they have folded in this current financial climate.
Can anyone else shed any light on this situation?

Re: Pre paid credit cardsIDT
Also I'm worried about IDT because when I couldnt put cash on using paypoint, I went to the Post Office & paid in £200 cash which was accepted & I have a receipt but when I check on the web account , IDT has not credited it to the card.
This means IDT have £200 money that I cant access in their bank accounts, which I needed to make an online purchase this weekend. I cant get another card over the weekend to complete the purchase because you cant activate their cards at the weekend or in he evenings as the customer services is closed
Frustrating. So I've lost £200 cash & I know in advance that their ustomer services is slow & useless

Re: Pre paid credit cardsIDT
I have an IDT Prime card. I have the same problem. i contacted IDT customer services & an assistant told me to fax my card details, to a number he gave me, + provide my address & a copy of my passport to have the annual maximum increased. He said it would take 24 hrs to 48 hours to activate.
Over a week later i still cant add money to the card, its automatically rejected.
Now I'm concerned because:
1. There is nothing on their website saying that you are required to fax your passport to increase reloading limits.
2. already provided my passport details online on the idt card idtprime site, so why did he need it again by fax.
3. They seem to have lost my details or it went to someone else who may use it illegally.
Really peeved at the lack of response from customer services , even though theyre only available week days in office hours.
Thats why I'm going somewhere else I think, becaue the card is useless if I can't add more money. Shame as it worked well for online purchases.
Thanks

Re: Pre paid credit cards - shambles!
Hi
I have one of these prepaid card, and would NEVER get one again. You get charged for putting money on the card, for using it, and for not using it. When you wont to use a cash point, ( I myself dont), but if you add up these charges it can seem a large amount.
I reported my card had deductions it should'nt have had and they told me that they would class the card as LOST/STOLEN and no more deductions would come off, yet the next day money was. They were not very helpful at all.
I my self would not recommend the IDT FINANCE Prime Payment Card.
I now have to send a photo of my passport and other document to get my money back. But they will make deductions on it before I can get any money back.
So please really read the small print on the terms and conditions and then decide

Re: Cash Plus are the cheapest for heavy users
As a follow-up to my earlier post, Crewcard eventually agreed that I was able to sign up using my driving licence details but worryingly the instructions sent to me by email conflicted with the requirements on their application form!
Eventually I got accepted and my cards duly arrived. According to the terms and conditions I could expect my PINs to arrive within the next 5 days. Four weeks on (and three further emails only one of which gained a response) no sign of these PINs.
So they have my money that has already been put on the card but I cannot access that money. I now feel that they should be reported to the FSA as unsuitable to run any financial business and either fined or shut down. What do others think?

Re: Pre paid credit cards - shambles!
The money available on my credit card's doesnt belong to me, it the banks, so im not worried about that. Plus i dont have £5k in my bank account either. I really dont see any real risk.
I can see how the card would suit you based on your spending habits though, so if its what your after then go for it. I myself wouldnt pay the charges associated with it.

Eco_warrior: Hi MrTWitch
I havent personally, though its quite a straight-forward process, but i appreciate it could take some time depending on the circumstances. Very little risk involved really imo.
As for the £40 on the card, id sooner loose the banks money than my own!
What if someone got hold of your details somehow and ran up a £5000 bill for example? Wouldn't you rather put £40 at risk than that much?

Re: Pre paid credit cards - shambles!
Thanks for that MrTWitch! Exactly, if there is only £40 on the card, then that's all at risk, as opposed to however much is in your main bank account, which your credit card is linked to! That's why it's far safer to use something like Mastercard Prime, as long as you don't leave too much on there at any one time and I'm excellent at monitoring that sort of thing!

Re: Pre paid credit cards - shambles!
Eco-warrior,
Have you ever tried to get your money bank from a credit card company? The process is long winded and potentially could be thousands of available balance is 'in limbo'.
If there's only £40 on a prime card then surely that's all that is at risk!

Re: Pre paid credit cards - shambles!
All your finances? How so? I dont see why that would necessarily be the case. I would think the vast majority of the time they would only have access to the credit card details itself, and even then thats the banks money not yours, so they foot the bill. I dont think a Prime card is in any way safer than a credit card.

Re: Pre paid credit cards - shambles!
Hello? If someone gets hold of your main credit card details, then they have access to all your finances! If they get hold of your Prime details, all they can get is what's on the card and if you've any sense, you won't put too much on it at any one time. And if something does go wrong, all you need to do is get a new Prime card and therefore a new account number!
Think before answering.

If anything goes wrong?
What would be the difference if fraud is committed on a Prime card as compared to a regular credit card?
