car insurance for young drivers
Hi i am currently learning to drive an have looked at tonnes of insurance websites incuding all of the recommended ones such as liverpool victoria and quinn direct and received quotes but they were all ridiculously high. The cheapest i have come across so far is with Churchill who will charge me £1325 for fully comp cover whilst on my provisional licence and this price is likely to be similar when i pass. Other insurers failed to compete with this. Does anyone know of any better deals, please not that fully comp cover is required please post if you have an suggestions thanks

Re: car insurance for young drivers, The proper alternative
Hi, im 17 yrs old. I passed my test 6mnths after i turned 17. I love driving its like my life. So the day i passed my test i was on the hunt for cheap insurance. i searched for forum on ways out and no body had a good way out. I tried TPO cover on my dads bmw 318 as a third driver, dad/mom/me. nothing cheaper then 1600. so then i put in different Postcodes for insurance. Cheapest i got was 1240. So then i cracked it. Just wen i was about to buy the 1240 insurance which was so dodgy, ie wrong address, wrong mileage, wrong value of car. I called Norwich union. Took a comprehensive quote with open driving option. £815 was the quote. Correct mileage/value/location. everything legal. Open driving is a 'any driver' quote. Nobody does this without age restrictions apart from norwich union direct. So i have got my certificate of insurance and this is what it says - Any driver driving with the permision of the policyholder (my dad). Also it says any driver under 25 is tpo cover and over 25 is comp. who cares, cars only worth £1200. So thats how u do it.

Re: car insurance for young drivers, The proper alternative
Hi Jay I was very interested to read what you had said about Open Driving with Norwich Union, I have just come off the phone to them and have been told that Open Driving is for over 25's only. I asked the person to check as I said that I had heard otherwise - he said he checked with supervisor and again confirmed it is for over 25 only. Have you other details that may help, or could I have missed something when I asked for Open driving. The policy would be in my name, and I would want my 18 year old son to be able to drive. Thanks

Re: car insurance for young drivers, The proper alternative
I work for an insurance company, and i don't think there is anyway that any underwriters would allow an 'any' driver policy, regardless of age.
Most 'any' driver policies would allow a driver of over 25 or over 30 to drive the car, with permission of the policy holder.
This will probably be included with your policy documents. Although it says that you have 'any' driver cover of the certificate of insurance, if the police ring the insurance company and this is not the case you will get a conviction for driving without insurance as you are not correctly covered.
I think you should phone Norwich Union to check this with them as i think this is highly unlikely they allow any driver regardless of age.

Re: car insurance for young drivers, The proper alternative
dnt knw what insurance company u work 4. I know most companies do for over 25 but Norwich union r the only ones who do it for any driver. I phoned them and asked them if i can drive. im 17. they said yes. if u phone them ask them about open driving without age restrictions it should ok. they have two types. one for only over 25's and one that covers any driver.

Re: car insurance for young drivers, The proper alternative
Jay, When I contacted Norwich Union after seeing your original post, they initially said -No. I asked them to go and check again, having read your info, having spoken to the supervisor the answer remained the same, that only over 25 years of age could drive on policy, could not identify one that would cover my 18 year old son.

Re: car insurance for young drivers
can i suggest that you have a look at the website www.clickthepepper.com it is a different concept that allows you to buy insurance weekly whilst you are on a provisional licence and still build up towards a no claim bonus.

Re: car insurance for young drivers
If you put an older driver on the policy for example a parent who has a clean driving license with no claims this will bring the price of your policy down.

Re: car insurance for young drivers, The proper alternative
Well, technically, if a younger driver goes on a policy it should be rated as the MAIN driver due to the risk. A lot of companies/agents don't know this and still carry on insuring you at rates as a 'Casual' driver when infact your parents are only on the policy to make it cheaper. This is highly unacceptable and in the event of a claim the insurer could recalculate the premium and refuse the claim. It's fine for a younger driver to be only named, but for those under 25, they should be rated as 'Main' and the 1st driver as 'Casual' to obtain the correct price based on risk.

Re: car insurance for young drivers, The proper alternative
Thank you so much for this great accurate advise my 17 yr old passed his driving test in Deember 2006 we bought him a 1.0 litre vw polo worth around £800 quotes for third party were 3000 pound at cheapest as a named driver ie: me as main driver and my son as named was £1100 for the yr third party fire and theft. In the last yr he has had no accidents or claims premium with Endsleigh Insurance was £2100 ????? He has just purchased a 1.2 Fiat punto x reg, insurance for me as main him named cheapest quote £1300 thirdparty fire & theft. I followed your advise and rang Norwich Union at first they quoted £1700 for t/p/f/t then I asked about the "open policy" Fully comp for over 25s, t/p only for under 25s £637 Total cost with £350 excess, I choose to lower the excess to £120 which came to a total £697 for the year. Thanks Norwich union and thanks to jay_2312 for sharing your fantastic info with us normal folk who dont want to be ripped off by these high insurance premiums. Thank you so much

Re: car insurance for young drivers, The proper alternative
When I rang Norwich Union they Initially quoted £1700 for my Husband and 18 year old,but you need to ask for the"open driver policy" make sure you state that the older driver will be fully comp and the under 25 year old will be third party only cover. The excess on our policy is £120 but for my 18 year old son it is set at £250. Norwich Union def have this policy as I got all documents yesterday checked them and it clearly states that my husband is Insured fully comp and any driver under 25 has third party only cover on this car, total premium was less than £700 less than half the orignal quote.
