I have seen somewhere that you actually buy car insurance for Serbia at the border when entering their Country, but I can't remember where I saw it, you would be perhaps well advised to contact the British embassy, for confirmation of this before travelling.

Have a look here, Scroll down to green card/short term insurance on the left side.

    Re: car insurance for serbia

Hi just got back from Bulgeria and went through Serbia without paying-but not easy?  Went through Gate 31 and the UN let us in on the Montenegro to Pristina road 65/80.  However we were turned away once on way back and then we were asked for 150euros to be let in so went round via Hungary 7 euros.  We are going back in September and i think we will have to pay which really P........ me off as you do not get an official document just a bit of papper from a guy in a shed and it is cash only and if you have a crash i bet he wont help then you have to pay tolls in there currency that no one wants to exchange so Serbia was a a pain unlike the rest of Eatern Europe which was fantastic and no hasle with insurance.  So if any one does no how to get cheap insurance and not of a tramp at the boarder love to hear from you

    Good luck

    Peter in York

    Re: car insurance for serbia

Hi, my partner is Serbian and we have travelled to Serbia on many occasions by car.

We travel via Hungary and cross the border at Horgos, You will not be able to enter the country without purchasing Car Insurance for Serbia. At the border your passport will be held untill you produce your insurance document for Serbia.

You can purchase this insurance which is approx 150 Euros for one month, in one of the offices based on the border which is open 24 hours. You can pay in Euro's or change your money to Serbian Dinar at the border, again foreign exchange is open 24 hours a day.

We are also lookikng for an insurance company in the UK that will cover Serbia via a green card so if you come across a company that offers this service please let us know.

    Happy traveling.

    Thanks

Recently I switched insurance to Saga (that time of life afraid !) they offer unlimited cover in Europe where your car insurance will automatically cover you when driving aboard in Europe, unless you are going to the following countries below in which case you need a Green card, they also state your cover level will be the same as in your policy here in the UK ....i.e. no reduction in the standard of cover from comp to third party.

Albania, Belarus, Bosnia - Herzegovina, Macedonia, Moldova, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine.

    Hi
Can you tell me if the situation is still the same when crossing the border to Serbia. My wife is Serbian and we are travelling there by car in June, and can't obtain green card insurance from anyone in the UK.
    Best Regards

    Re: car insurance for serbia

    Hi guys,

I'm with esure ins comp and have been since 2007. My wife is Serbian and we travelled to Belgrade using my car....then onto Montenegro.

I can't see where all the problems are coming from...As in " you only can buy ins from the border for 150 euros " I've never heard of that one.....Well in Aug 07 we drove through Croatia into Serbia and had no problem what so ever at the border. Police asked us for our passports and then asked us if we had a green card. I showed it but the policeman ddn't even check it....then off we went. We had no trouble at any of the borders...even coming back from Serbia into Croatia.

We also did the journey in Aug 08 and again i got the green card through Esure ins comp. And still we had no problems at any of the borders.

Again in Feb 09 we did the journey by car to Serbia then onto Zlatibor...No problems at any of the borders. I've never been stopped once in Serbia by the police...

So if your insured through esure then you'll have no problems...Cheers

    Gary
