I agree with the insurer - you need to be more organised when calling for quotes, i.e. have all info with you when you call up. You will have been asked if there were any previous claims, you needed to be 100% sure.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news.......................

Insurers work on the principle of utmost good faith. I.e your telling the truth. searching databases and acting like big brother before offering a price would be harder to calculate and more costly. The system used to search details is in fairness out there to protect aginst fraudulent claims and not geniune ommissions like yourself hence why it is only used post claim. also insurance is about claim not blame. i know its not your fault ie you wernt driving but in insurance terms fault claim means nobody for insurer to get money back from. You could however try and push that this was an honest omission and with good legal representation you may get a pay-out for the claim minus the difference the previous claim would have made had it been included at inception. seek proper legal advice and they will tell you if you have a case! hope this helps.

Cancelled car claim due to non-disclosure

Just wondering if anyone could give me a bit of help on this one.

I had my front door glass smashed a month or so ago and the car keys taken from inside of door (I know they shouldn't have been there, lesson learned), the car turned up 3 weeks later, it looked ok and was taken staight to a lock-up by police, I paid £220 to get car out plus another £120 to get keys cut and when I tried to start it up the engine was kaput, first my insurers tried to say I was not due a payout because I had not left enough oil in the car before it was stolen, I am still laughing about that one ! Then, they moved for the 'non-disclosure ' tactics, I was on the policy by myself for a while but added my girlfriend onto policy later on, when adding her on I neglected to say she had made a claim in the last 5 years, the claim she made was on my policy as a named driver 2/3 years ago and I have me down on the policy again as making no claims as it was her who claimed not me, she had a crash. When processing my claim the insurers said it was in dispute because of this and said it would be weeks before I found anything out. I have now cancelled the claim myself in case they want to start charging me any admin costs etc... if claim failed as I am now seriously out of pocket.

I have now sold the car on for £300 and it was insured for 3k, I am seriously wondering now whether I should try and re-instate claim but how do I stand if I have not got the car anymore anyway, I "might" be able to buy it back as I know the guy I sold it to.
The annoying thing also is that I am still paying £50+ a month for the policy for the next 4/5 months and I havent even got a car, the insurer said I could cancel policy from date of theft and I am going to call them to do this but I know when I calI i will end up getting the run around on that too.

When I was getting my claim processed they have your information/claim history up on the computer straight away, why dont they do this when you are taking the policy out, seems underhanded to me, they are happy to take your money and already know they will not honour any claims. I would not have minded paying more on the policy if they pointed out my omission at the time, your normally sorting this mundane insurance stuff out late at night after a long day at work, I genuinely forgot about the claim, and I certainly dont have a record of the date.

Rant over, but would appreciate some feedback if possible.

    Costs so far:
