Cancellation cover for close relatives with pre-medical conditions

I wonder if someone could help me here please

I've been informed that there are no travel insurance companies that will pay for cancellation costs if it is due to a pre-medical condition of a close family member. However, some insurance companies clearly state this on the policy wording, while others are more vague and say that they will not pay claims related to an "anticipated event".

The definition of this is below:

'anticipated event' means any event or occurrence which you or your immediate family knew would occur or could have reasonably have expected to occur during your trip and which you or your immediate family were aware of at the time of booking the trip.

My mother had cancer last year but has now completed treatment and it was all successfully removed but if however I was to cancel due to her condition would this be classed as an "anticipated event" because I was aware of it when I booked?

I'm just asking because I'm led to believe that however the travel insurance policy is worded that there are NO travel insurance companies that would pay out for a claim that was related to the illness of my mother? Is this correct?

If there are no companies that would cover me for cancellation costs in relation to this, then it doesn't matter who I choose to take my policy out with as they are all the same.

    Many thanks.

If the claim is a large one, most travel insurance companies will do what they can to avoid paying. If you think that you might not be covered, then you wont be. A lot of insurers have got stung too many times by people who leave their old camera on the beach while they go swimming then pretend to be surprised to find it gone.

Hi, I am in the same situation as you and wondered if you managed to find any insurance policy that covered you? I am worried that should i have to cancel as the family member is ill rather than deceased, that the company will avoid paying out. Many thanks for any advice you can give.

Re: Cancellation cover for close relatives with pre-medical conditions

All travel policies quotes assuming all of the people travelling are in perfect health, they also assume that anyone not travelling who the travel plan depend on eg a business partner or immediate member of the family are also in perfect health.

If any of the above people are not in perfect health eg they have existing medical conditions any claims as a direct result of the medical condition will be excluded eg Medical or Cancellation claims. If you ring and declare the medical conditions they will advise you if they will offer cover, if there is any extra premium or bigger excess. If you accept this and pay the extra premium if applicable you will be covered for any claims as a direct result of it providing you have given the correct information.

Please bear in mind that they will consider taking aspririn to prevent heart problems and blood pressure tablets as an existing medical condition so you should declare it.

Most Travel Insurers will offer cover for minor existing medical conditions whether it for the people travelling or not travelling. If you are having problems getting cover there are specialist Insurers who offer cover or alternatively if its a heart condition try the Heart Association as they will have a scheme with a sympthetic Insurer and the same the cancer assoiations for cancer sufferers etc etc

Travel Insurance does contain a lot of small print, but if you are honest with your Insurers and read your policy so understand what it covers and more importantly what it does not cover along with any expectations they have for you your should not have a problem. Please remember cheapest is not always the best especially with Travel Insurance
