    Nationwide has to be as close to bullet-proof as you can get.

    Personally I would sleep a lot better with money in Nationwide than if it was in Abbey. The rules on building society lending and borrowing are stricter than for banks. Both are covered by the same compensation schemes though.

    Building Societies

    My own savings are with Abbey and, as I have nothing like £50000.00, I suppose I'm safe. However, my wife's account is with the Nationwide. As this is still a Building Society, is it unaffected by the current financial turmoil and, if that is not the case, what protection (if any!) does she have?
