Hi all, I've come across this website and knowing there are others who have been messed around by BT is encouraging.
I previously had Virgin broadband, but that contract has come to an end now and I decided to get a BT line re-opened at the house (free of charge) in order to get broadband from a cheaper source ie AOL or Orange. I checked the BT broadband page to check what speed of broadband I would receive before I got the line put in using my postcode, and I quote
"We've just tested your line and can confirm that your line supports the Uk's most complete broadband package, BT total broadband and we can confirm that you will be able to reach a maximum download speed of 4.5 megabits per second"
That sounded great, and I proceeded to go ahead with the 12 month phone line contract, for £11 per month. This was 10 days ago. Since then I have now found out, after numerous phone calls to AOL and Orange, that they cannot provide me with a broadband service as the line I have in my house is inadequate. I have been on the phone to BT approximately 30 times, and they have now decided to tell me that the line will only support broadband of speeds up to 256K . Yes I repeat, 256 K.
I immediately stated that I was unhappy with the whole situation and that I wanted to terminate my contract, as I had only got the line installed so as to have broadband. The man said that I have entered a 12 month contract and there is nothing I can do. I asked to speak to a manager or superior, but he said I can only do this through writing and gave me an address!
Can anyone provide me with any help or advice in what action I can take? I'm totally demoralised from the amount of phone calls and circles I've been run round.
Many thanks
