ok people, it is as i said:

instead of reconnecting via BT you can use MAAF - they are cheaper (115 instead of 125£) and you have a monthly contract if you only take their landline service. so reconnect via MAAF and then choose your ISP (not necessarily them).

That sounds great then, I'll give them a call and find it out.

You should be able to use other broadband providers on a MAAF line rental; they are owned by BT and are quite flexible.

the 12 month contract is for maaf broadband, the landline has no minimum contract - at least thats what's on their website. the only disadvantage is that when i choose maaf as my line provider, i cannot use any other broadband provider apart from them, right? because otherwise i would like to even stay with maaf but choose another provider for broadband, e.g. tiscali...

    mloeser:

Dont you just have a 1-month min. contract period if you reconnect via madasafish? And you save another 10 pounds due to the setup cost are 115 instead of 125 quid.

Therefore I think (and I hope it will work out, cause Im just about to do it) its better to reconnect via madasafish and then switch from them to whatever provider you wanted after one month...

    Can someone confirm this?

    Thanks,

    ML

As far as I am aware it's a 12 month contract on Madasafish but if BT says you must pay £125 the MAAF is a much better option as it is only £115 and includes E&W calls as part of the £9.99 monthly tariff which is also £1 cheaper than BT's.

shiverkitten: thanks a lot for the info, i wasnt aware of that. why cant u just switch from madasafish to another provider? i thought they basically offer the same services as BT, hence theyre a BT daughter... so is their landline different from a BT landline?

    greets!

mloeser, that just means you will have two sets of reconnection fees.

You cannot painlessly switch from Madasafish directly to another provider. Not without lots more money and an at least notional transitory reconnection to BT. And you are likely to be without any service for a couple of weeks.

Sid was British Gas, not BT!

Yes. Or you can pay £70 to close the contract early. Tell Sid - he doesn't seem to have heard, yet.

BT landline reconnection - compulsory 12 month line rental?

We've asked BT to reconnect the landline at a property where there is a 'phone socket on the wall but there has been no service contract for at least 12 years. They tell us that in addition to the £125 fee we have to sign up for a 12-month line rental contract. Is this really true?
