BG - Price protection 2006 - moved to Price Promise 2010

I signed up for Price Protection (or Promise?) 2006 and the deal came to an end in April this year.

I shopped around and the cheapest deal was with E.ON, so I duly signed up to transfer.

I have now have a phone call from BG saying that as I am on their Price Promise 2010 (they moved me onto this without asking me), I have to pay a £35 per supply (one for Gas & one for Electricity - £70 total) to move suppliers.

Where do I stand with this? Surely they cannot move me onto a non-standard plan without my express permission? When the 2006 fix deal came to an end, should I not have been put onto the standard rate? I am, I feel, understandably livid about this and will be cancelling my maintenence contracts with them, but do I just have to swallow the leaving charges? The response from the guy calling was that I should have had a letter from them saying that if I didn't opt out, I would be put onto this new plan. I cannot remember getting such a letter, and even if I did, I would object to being moved onto a tarrif with a tie in.

It will have been written into the agreement what plan you would get at the end of the term if you didn't express a preference. I agree that they should have contacted you or put you onto a tariff that you could switch from without 12 months notice but I am unsure of your rights. If you contact ConsumerDirect, they will advise.
