You sould investigate tax credits and council tax benefit. These are not backdated so, if you qualify, the sooner you apply the better.

You can also talk to your creditors. Some mortgage providers will take payments of interest only during periods of hardship.

    Being Laid Off

My husband has been on guaranteed 2 days a week since a fortnight before christmas. Whether he works or not he gets paid two days. This has meant a considerable drop in his wages.

It was agreed that way in December as there was a lot of work in January and he couldnt lay every one off just before christmas but he couldnt continue to pay everyone their full rate.

We are now heading into the third week in January. My bills are still the same. My mortgage still has to be paid and now we are hitting the tight spot. The only help we get is £50 family credit. We are running at a loss of about £150 a week. All our savings are now gone. Next months mortgage is the last one covered.

We cant get help on the mortgage insurance as he isnt signing on. He cant sign on as he is working 2 days (that means 16 hours and you can only sign on if you work 15 or less). We cant claim if he makes himself out of work. We are at a stalemate.

Does anyone know what we can do next. After February we are going to be in a bit of a mess. My wage covers most of the bills. What do we do about the rest. I need to put money into the bank to cover bills but at this rate it leaves us nothing for food etc.

Where do we go from here. I can see the mess coming, how do I prevent it hitting us?
