Re: Bad experience with Eon boiler care - Apology received from Eon

I really do believe out of all the energy companies and taking my experience they are the pits for customer service.

Re: Bad experience with Eon boiler care - Apology received from Eon

Just wanted to give an update.

after complaining to Eon (see my post from 13 August) the person handling my complaint rang me and left several messages on my answermachine explaining that they were not going to pursue me for the last 2 months of my Eon central heating cover contract and are going to refund me for 2 months. The person handling the complaint had listened to the conversations I had with Eon and felt that they did not make it sufficiently clear that I would have to take out a new 12 month contract.

They also said that they will look at their procedures. Obviously, this is welcome and actually quite encouraging. I had the impression that my complaint was taken quite seriously which is good.

Still, I suspect that the underlying problem will remain: if you have an existing boiler cover contract with Eon (and I suspect with other companies) and move house you may have to get a new 12 month contract with them in the new property or pay cancellation fees/or pay off the old contract....

so just to alert people to this.

Take note that if you have E-on Central Heating Care that E-ons keeping promises or the gas and electricity regulations do not apply.I asked for £20 when an engineer did not turn up even after they texted me to say he was coming .They did not inform me till 2 hours into the four hour window.Yet when I complained they told me they had no legal requirement to pay me anything.Beware!

Bad experience with Eon boiler care and moving house

Warning to those who have Eon boiler cover and move house.

We have had Eon 50 boiler cover (means £50 callout charge - but cheaper product) for a few years for a usually quite reliable 10 year old Worcester Bosch boiler.

We were reasonably happy until this year
    2 problems
    1. we had an intermittent problem with the hot water supply that sometimes it would just stop producing hot water. we called Eon, an engineer came out and "fixed" the problem. we had to pay £50 callout charge. unfortunately, within a week the same problem recurred and we would have had to pay £50 again callout. which I refused as I don't think that the problem was resolved the first time. Eon said that they would refund the £50 callout charge if the problem was the same as the original problem but I did not want to take the risk. So I wanted to cancel the policy but would have had to pay £75 cancellation charge, so it was cheaper to continue for another 2 months with the policy.

    HOWEVER

2nd problem. Soon after we moved house. Originally I was told that the existing policy could simply be transferred to the new house. (we were in month 10 of a 12 month policy) As we were planning to get a new boiler I was not really interested in a long contract. to my surprise, Eon sent me a letter with a new 12 month contract for the new house. when I rang them (required multiple phone calls to a 0845 number over 2 days- arghh!) they told me that I had to take out a new 12 month contract , otherwise they would not cover the boiler in the house we moved to. I was annoyed because this was not what I had understood when I had rang them about moving house. I was told that Eon always says that their contracts are 12 months. However, I pointed out that I was not told that I would have to take out a NEW 12 month contract - and the Eon person had the audacity to say that they don't have to tell me that I have to take out a new 12 month contract with them!
They now sent me a bill for the last month of the old 12 month contract, even though this refers to the old house. So they are charging me for a service in the old house, even though I don't live there anymore! I don't think this is right.
so beware! I actually think that they are in breach of their own terms and conditions because nowhere does it say that if you move house you have to take out a new 12 month contract with them or have to pay off the old contract in full!

I think this is problematic and unethical behaviour by a big utility company as you are either being forced to pay something for nothing (ie pay for cover for the old property where you don't live anymore; or pay hefty cancellation fee of £75) or are forced to take out a new 12 month policy with them.

So if you know that you may be moving house soon, I strongly advise you to check what the company is going to do when you move.
