    Backdated Charges

In the process of getting a quote for renewal from the company I have been insured by since 2007, they asked me whether I have any speeding offences and I said yes - 4 and a half years ago, an SP30. I have always done an automatic renewal and never spoken to anyone in person. I have always assumed that automatically find out about the SP30.

I have chosen to not renew the policy, and didn't have any claims on it at all during that entire period. Now they are telling me I need to pay £365 backdated charges, which I can't understand as I didn't make any claims so they are not out of pocket. I realise now, having read some of the forums I needed to tell them at the time, but it wasn't very clear.

I don't think I should have to pay the charges, as they could just decide on any cost now couldn't they? I don't have a policy with them any more, and it is taken into account on my new policy with a different insurer. What would happen if I didn't pay it?

    thanks
