    Re: AOL Setup?

    Mr H,

I have not tested this before but I believe that whether you have a splitter and a telephone extension lead or a slave socket installed properly the result should be the same.

After all, the incoming phone line is a single pair of wires connected to the master socket (on pins 2 & 5), from the master you continue the two original wires to the slave socket (on pins 2 & 5). There is also an earth which you run to pin 3 on the slave sockets (which originates from the capacitor in the master socket) this wire is what makes the phone ring when connected to the slave sockets.

Your splitter will split the pair of wires for you and your extension lead will probably provide all 6 pins on the plug all the way to the socket so pins 2,3 & 5 will all be available at the socket end. All you need to remember is that no matter what you plug into a telephone socket, after installing ADSL, you need an ADSL filter before the equipment (telephone or ADSL router / modem).

So if you want the phone downstairs and the broadband upstairs just get two ADSL filters and plug one into the other side of your splitter and plug your phone into the corresponding side of the ADSL filter and plug the other ADSL filter into your extension lead next to the PC and plug the broadband in.

    Mr_H:

Hi, I am thinking of purchasing AOL Broadband Silver as I am currently
on dail-up. I have a splitter plugged into my phone line at the moment (one for
phone and the other phone line extenstion cable running upstairs to my PC
    for dial up).

My question is in regards to the broadband filter? - I have been told
that that filter needs to be plugged diretcly into the phone line? But I want
to know if can I plug the filter into the other end of the phone extension
upstairs so I can just run the network cable from the router to my PC, and
leave the phone line extension in? or would it be best just to installed
another phone socket upstairs near the PC?

     Thanks.

Hello, sorry to barge in Jason and also if im not allowed to post. Just thought i would help

several things you can do. A filter needs to be plugged in to where ever there is a device
(phone, computer, sky) using the phone line. So this means you would need a
filter before your phone down stairs and a filter AFTER the extension cable
    before the router upstairs.

The wiring should sound like this

    BT master socket (wall socket)

^^^^^splitter plugged in to BT socket / wall socket^^^^^^^

Splitter (side 1) plug filter in and then plug the phone in to the filter

Splitter (side 2) plug extension lead in and then upstairs plug the filter in to the end of the extension
and then plug in the router in to the filter

the above should work for you. This was the way i had mine
    settup before rewiring the house.

a better option would be to have a hardwired socket upstairs BUT its only a second
option and is not necessary. If you decide to go for the hardwired option you can buy face plates with built in ADSL filters so you just plug your router directly in to the socket and off you go.

    Re: AOL Setup?

    Hi Mr H

Erm I'm not 100% sure about this but in order for broadband to work you need to have the micro-filters in the phone sockets - whether that means you can then put an extension into a microfilter to be able to get broadband I'm not certain but that seems to make sense to me.

Have you asked your ISP what they think?

    Cheers
