I recommend trying the Unlock Broker Panel, who have established agreements with insurers to take on risks involving unspent convictions.

The Co-op will insure unless you or anyone normally living with you have ever been convicted of, or has a prosecution pending in respect of arson, or any other offence involving dishonesty of any kind, e.g. fraud, robbery, theft or handling of stolen goods. Also give 1/3 off if you take out both building and contents and 15% more if buy online

    Hi everyone,

I can certainly recommend the great work UNLOCK do, I've used them for some of my clients, it's well worth looking on their website where the details and conditions of each insurance broker is held. Give it a go nothing to lose!

    Regards,

    Paul

I moved your new question to this thread, because the members post above would seem appropriate in your case. It may help you to obtain the cover you need quickly, if you contact the above organisation for advice.

Re: Insurance for people with convictions

    Dear All,

I work for UNLOCK, The National Association of Reformed Offenders. As mentioned above, we have worked in the area of providing insurance advice to people with previous convictions for a number of years now since it was clear that people with previous convictions faced a blanket ban to any form of standard insurance.

We have now developed a list of 13 insurance brokers who are able to provide such cover. Guildhall Brokers (mentioned above) are one of those, along with various other providers who provide various types of insurance. You can view this on UNLOCK’s website, www.unlock.org.uk.

UNLOCK, as an independent charity, do not receive any financial benefit from the list. It was developed by reformed offenders, and I myself have previous convictions, and the insurance issue was the way I became aware of UNLOCK.

If you contact the brokers, we value your feedback, as well as your views on various other issues that are faced for people with convictions. I know, from the number of people who call me every day, that the issue of insurance isn't known about by everybody who needs to know, so we are keen to work on any way we can spread the message, because there are thousands of people who potentially are paying for useless information, because they haven't declared their convictions, either through fear of the insurance being cancelled, or through not recognising the significance of a conviction.

    Best Wishes to All,

    Chris

    Insurance for people with convictions

My insurance was invalidated when someone moved into my house who had a criminal conviction.

I spent hours on the phone trying to get cover and eventually came across a company who would insure me.

If you are having difficulty try www.guildhallbrokers.com and give them a call.

Re: Anyone know of home insurance for ppl with criminal convictions in last 5 years??

If you have 'unspent' convictions you will find it almost impossible to get insurance from the mainstream companies. You certainly shouldn't use automatic quote searches on the web as they will not be able to take into account your personal circumstances.

There is a charity called UNLOCK that represents reformed offenders who have turned their lives around. They put their members in touch with a whole list of insurance brokers and advise people on which brokers accept which kind of convictions. Their website is www.unlock.org.uk

    Hi Wendy,

Yes, this I can sympathise with. This kind of situation needs to be referred to an underwriter.

When you describe this, you make it sound like this was some time ago. This is good. When you speak to insurers/brokers about getting a quote, you can ask them to refer this to the underwriter and explain the situation fully. I guarantee one will accept her circumstances and not load on the premium for it.

I have done this many times. Get quoting, get calling and ask them to refer to the U/W on her behalf and get them to contact you!!

    Your daughter is NOT uninsurable!

Re: Anyone know of home insurance for ppl with criminal convictions in last 5 years??

I agree about arson and fraud, and would have agreed about not letting anyone with serious convictions getting insurance - or at least not without having to pay through the nose for it - but I have changed my mind now that my daughter is in a similar position.  When she was 18, she was suffering from serious depression following the sudden death of her father.  She went out clubbing and, on a mixture of antidepressants and excess alcohol, hit someone who was laughing at her distraught state - 3 feet from a policeman!!  She was later convicted of Assault and Battery.  She has now, thankfully, got through her depression, has a lovely baby and is a fantastic mum but she cannot get house insurance, which is not exactly helping her in her new Life. Why should she now be vulnerable to accidents/damage/burglary etc costs because she cannot get insurance?  Ok, her premium should perhaps be a little higher than most but not to be able to get any at all is unreasonable.

If someone moved in with me, and had an Arson or Fraud conviction, they would be straight out the door anyway!

I'm glad to see Insurers punishing those with such convictions, and it makes sense to also!

Re: Anyone know of home insurance for ppl with criminal convictions in last 5 years??

    Hi

I have found that nearly every insurance company will punish you if you have someone living with you that has a criminal conviction.  I held contents insurance for 10 years and have never made a claim, but when my partner moved in they would not renew my policy.  I spent days calling other Insurance companies and no-one would underwrite a policy.  I eventually got a price through www.deliteinsurance.co.uk  If the conviction is Fraud or Arson you will struggle.
