Re: Ancestry UK has taken my money

    Hi

Just phoned Ancestryuk. Have to say that I got thro' first time. Put thro' to a charming lady called Yvonne who was clearly well used to dealing with this particular problem. She asked for my bank account details, which I refused to give, so she searched by surname and apparently while trawling the geneology sites I had signed up for two weeks free trial with Ancestryuk. Buried among three yards of terms and cnditions there is, apparently, a clause which states that if you don.t cancel the free trial, you automatically get charged for a subscrition. This is clealry a marketing ploy which pays dividends for Ancestryuk. Yvonne very cheerfully agreed to refund the subscrition fee, fair enough. Clearly I should have spent three hours going thro' the terms and agreements but I can't help feeling that for a PC novice just getting the phone number woukd prove difficult and that a fair proportion of people give up and let the charge stand, enough anyway for Ancestryuk to find it profitable.

    Hi John

Just had exactly the same experience (27.5.2009) as yourself with Ancestryuk. About to phone them. Will keep you posted.

You must have given your bank details or signed up to some form of membership or service. ? ........

Slightly confusing when you contradictory further state "when I phone Ancestry UK they want my bank details"....can you clarify further. They must already have them to have taken money............but yet they still want them. ?
