    Re: American Express Refused Travel Insurance Claim

    The Insurers are correct that you cannot claim. Under an annual travel Insurance, the cover for the trips is switched on and off at the time of booking and relates to trips covered under the term of the policy. Your policy only covers trips from your home in the UK to countries within the European area. It does not matter that the loss was inside Europe, as the trip and any losses were not covered, as your trip to Canada was not within the terms of your policy.

    If you wanted to be covered for the trip to Canada, you should have phoned them at the time of booking to extend your policy.

    Have you checked your Home Insurance to see if any cover away from home will cover the loss.

    American Express Refused Travel Insurance Claim

    I lost my laptop bag at London Gatwick Airport and so I put in a claim though to American Express.. The claim was refused because :

    I have considered the supporting details you have provided in accordance with the Policy Terms and Conditions.

    I note from your Certificate of insurance that you purchased a European Select Annual Multi Trip Policy.
    This policy only provides cover for any trips that you take within the European geographical limits and therefore, I note your circumstances do not fall within the Policy conditions as you were travelling to Canada. In view of this, I am not in a position to recommend settlement of your claim.

    My respond to them was :
    I am not satisfied with your decision a all, reason being:

    1) I lost my belongings in the UK, that is well under the European Cover, and so I am eligible for the claim, for your reference here are the counties included within the region:

    European Cover:
    The following countries are included within the definition of
    Europe: Albania; Andorra; Austria; Azores; Bailiwick of
    Guernsey; Bailiwick of Jersey; Balearics; Belarus; Belgium;
    Bulgaria; Canary Islands; Corsica; Croatia; Cyprus; Czech
    Republic; Denmark; Egypt; Estonia; Finland; France; Germany;
    Gibraltar; Greece; Hungary; Iceland; Isle of Man; Israel; Italy;
    Latvia; Liechtenstein; Lithuania; Luxembourg; Madeira; Malta;
    Moldova; Monaco; Morocco; Netherlands; Norway; Poland;
    Portugal; Republic of Ireland; Romania; Russia west of the
    Ural Mountains; San Marino; Sardinia; Sicily; Slovak Republic;
    Slovenia; Spain; Sweden; Switzerland; Tunisia; Turkey;
    Ukraine; and the United Kingdom.

    2) It clearly states in your policy, any claims made should be within the geographical limits, I lost my belongings within the Europe, how does it makes any difference where I was travelling too ? and where does it says in the policy ? And I did not exceed the total number of days too.
    I am covered for European cities, and UK is a part of Europe and I lost my belongings within the UK. How can it relate to where, I was travelling ?

    FYI..

    Trip(s)
    A journey within the geographical limits shown on your Certificate of Insurance, which starts and ends in the United Kingdom area during the period of insurance and which does not exceed the consecutive or total days cover shown on your Certificate of Insurance. If your planned journey exceeds the number of consecutive days then no cover whatsoever will apply in respect of that journey, and you will need to buy alternative insurance for the whole of that journey.

    I would really appreciate if someone can help me with this matter, as it was lost within Europe ? The claim should be processed.

    Well i look forward to hearing some comments,

    Thanks
    Ankush
