You are right that it will mean a major engine re-build.

Providing that you have the service history then Citroen should pay up. If they refuse then you may need to take some action to force them so it may involve a visit to a solicitor.

advice-what is 'reasonable length of time' for a new engiune

The cam belt on my citroen C3 shredded only 2 months out of its 3 year warranty. i have had it from new. It took the entire engine with it and may cost anythinng around 4000 pounds. It has had all its services and has only been driven domestically. The interval for having the cam belt changed (and as i understand it the first time the engine is opened) is 100,000 miles. My car had done 44, 000. The statuory rights say that somethingmust be 'fit for purpose' or''last reasonable time'. I cannot believe a brand new car/engine should only last 44,000 miles/3 years, but there is no difinitive figure. Does anyone have a guideline on this? Do you thik I stand a good chance of claiming ( i am currelty waiting for Citoren to come back from the mechanics report so it may be they will offere to do it anyway. However i want to be for armed)
