Do we really expect a poster from 7 months ago to still be keeping an eye on this thread?

    sj40,samurai or jimny ?

there all good 4x4's and all a bit cheaper on fuel than the land rover, but LR carry more kudos in the countryside (may or may not be an issue) and 70% of all landrover's ever made are still on the road, a testimony to a bygone age of British engineering

    Fab idea Simon!

However, when I was 17 I had a Suzuki jeep and that would be my recommendation.

The only car I think you can consider is the ubiquitous land rover !

it may be a bit rough but

    1) will carry 1/2 dozen students
    2) insurance is dirt cheap (she's 17)
    3) cheap to repair minor prangs
    4) easy to fix, she might even take a mechanical interest in it

if she thinks its dull, buy a load of spray cans and let her customise it !

A new Panda 4x4 is £6997 from Fiatsupasaver. But you will suffer a fuel and performance penalty cf a diesel Panda at £5998, 43mpg v 66mpg and 20secs 0-60 v 13secs. Unless you have some crazy cattle grids you should'nt need any more ground clearance. I often drive mine across fields! Honest John of the telegraph regularly recommends them, especially the base model, new at £4997.
Insurance is group 1 or 2.

I've just done a quick search for you on this Panda. Brand new, you're looking at just under £9k. I've just looked on autotrader and I've found a 2004 (54 reg) 1.1L for £3695!!! It only has 3000 miles on the clock!!! With the low engine size, insurance would be reasonably ok too I'd of thought.

    :O)

Re: 1st car for teenage daughter!!!

    Hi there,

I'd maybe suggest the new Fiat Panda, it's a great small car - so would be ideal for a first timer, but they only came out last January so they maybe a bit pricey for her first car. They are 4x4 as standard so you wouldn't have to pay any extra for that feature. Have a look on Autotrader to see what second hand ones are about or use the Motoring section on Moneysupermarket.com to see what they are brand new. You might be able to bag quite a good deal on a new car compared to used prices.

    Hope this helps!

    1st car for teenage daughter!!!

Can anyone pls help me??? I have been looking for a car for my 17yr old daughter going to college in September. My problem is she is on a farm in the middle of nowhere so ideally she will need a 4x4 or a car with high ground clearance, just to get over the cattle grids!! Could anyone pls advise which 4x4 is cheaper on insurance for a 1st timer as having a few shocks when input her details!!
