Currently the only way I access the internet is via dialup pay-as-you-go via virgin and my phone is with BT. My phone bill as you can imagine is very expensive -usually £150 a quarter.I am on a BT TOGETHER option 1 (not the broadband package-just phone) +line rental is £31.06 alone, with VAT @£17.87 and the rest is the phone (hope this is clear). For the past few weeks I have been reading as much as I can regarding broadband and cannot decide which ones to pick I am put off Tiscali and and virgin media (2 for £20) because of poor customer service and I feel BT (BT total broadband option 1) but is this a good offer ? even though they have already had enough money of me. Madasafish (MAX Broadband Talk free ) appeal because of the good customer service, and it fits my requirements which are... I want free evening and weekend calls and Download capacity- 2MBPS- as I only surf the net I don't download games, music or video only the occasional programs for my laptop, so don't need masses I did a test and don't think I can get a great speed anyway - postcode DE75 7NU. I also want to pay about £25 -£30 a month including line rental My concerns are I get confused and bogged down by the jargon and on another website someone had commented you should always keep your line rental with BT, and i am confused by do I have to have cable, or does it somehow just go down my phone line (which I think I prefer), basically I am to confused now to pick one can someone please help in layman's terms ? Thanks stephanie.

Rate Madasafish on our new Customer Reviews

If you are a Madasafish customer then please access our customer reviews section and rate them. We have them for phone and broadband and wish to move both. We initially looked at Virgin media, but discovered that as well as their phone/BB package we would have to pay a BT line rental, which would also mean contacting BT and getting our line moved back from TT to BT first. I have to be honest at this point and confess I that I don't fully understand this, but AFAIK, the phone line we have is 'unbundled' (?), and run by TT not BT. Okay, so the point is we want to change over and Virgin said that we needed to rejoin BT first for line rental. This I was not keen to do. MAAF (despite the very odd name) seems to be pretty highly rated and good VFM and their site suggests that line rental is included in their package ("MAX Broadband and Talk Free £19.98 a month for the first six months and £24.98 thereafter") - so my initial question is this - if we do decide to go with MAAF, will we need to deal with BT at all? I have a VERY low opinion of BT after dealing with them when we moved to our current property and no wish to pay them any money, or have anything to do with them if I can avoid it. Secondly, I went through the MAAF signup process as a 'dummy run' just to see how it all worked, and was asked for a MAC code - Virgin also asked for this, but when I contacted TT they said that as the line was unbundled they couldn't generate one (but that this was actually a good thing as it should mean Virgin could take the line over more easily) - when I told Virgin this, they checked against my phone number, and that was when they said I needed to rejoin BT first. Very confused, and quite frustrated - we just bought a new PC, and have yet to connect it to the net - as TT's connection has been poor for a while, we decided, "New PC, New Start", and have not installed ANY net software at all yet. I want to get this right first time. Any advice much appreciated - especially from the seemingly endlessly patient Samara! ;-)

A year on and what the price for the next 12 months ? atten Samara

I have been with Madasafish for nearly exactly one year, and up to now they have been brillant. Very reliable and have'nt had any problems, and would up to now highly recommend them.So i hope the following is just due to lack of common sense !!. I sent an email to enquire on renewing for a second year, as on the website it states £9.99 broadband for 6 months then after that £14.99 for the broadband package I have. phone would be £9.99 for the 12 months. therefore for the first 6 months it would be £20 then £25 for the second 6 months I got an lovely email back which says because I am a loyal customer I could have the same package I am on which I understand to mean phone +broadband for XXX price for 12 months- i wanted to double check this so sent an email to query this.I got another Not so lovely email back from another person that the phone was on top for £9.99 for 12 months making it £25 for the entire 12 months. !! (which is dearer than the offer on your website)I rang them up to complain and they are adament it is £25 for 12 months and kept saying that when the orginal email said same package that I am currently on (i.e phone +broadband), it actually meant only broadband. I understand same package to mean the same as what I am currently on. If someone has made a mistake then i feel it should be honoured and not try to get out of it by saying same package only meant broadband.I have sent an email back for the atten of Samara - in the hope that some common sense can be used to resolve the issue(as Samara is quick and helpful resoving isues). As anyone else ever had this?, and I will keep posted ?Stephanie

joining madasafish

iv just requested my mac code from my current isp (tesco),and i am coming over to madasafish as they offer a faster service and its cheaper ive a few questions for the knowledgeable ones on here the microfilters that tesco supply (it says SPEEDTOUCH ADSL FILTER on then )can i use them or is it only ones that madasafish specify/supply will i b able to keep my present hotmail acc for e-mail ,as i know it quite well and a new service would mean starting again(im hopeless on a computer) and last but not least has anybody on here already moved over and if so was it relatively easy/no hassle (im imagining the worst,no broadband connection for weeks) thanks everybody oh and btw im currently using the sppedtouch modem through a usb port ,when i get the madasafish wireless kit do i just disconnect the existing wired modem and install the wireless receiver through a usb port?

Switching from Madasafish

Hi people, just a topic that we brought up in another post (http://www.moneysupermarket.com/community/forums/t/bt-landline-reconnection-compulsory-12-month-line-16896.aspx): Is it possible to set up a new landline via Madasafish and then switch from them to another supplier, e.g. Sky or TalkTalk? I was previously with tiscali. speeds were fine, fairly constant no problems, but I discovered movies and music to download, which tiscali seemed to take exception with, so as I was out of contract, I decided to have a look around and see if I could get a better deal elsewhere. I looked at some of the forums and decided upon madasafish. To be honest they all seemed pretty much the same, but the name kind of stuck in my head. I signed up for madasafish max plus broadband. The transfer seemed to go fairly smoothly, apart from tiscali knocking me off 2 or 3 days early. I phoned madasafish, explained the situation and they putme on line pretty much straight away. Great so far. I did the 10 days thing, with the line speed fluctuating. I kept checking the speed, started off at 0.28Mbs, but started to rise. Downloading I acheived sppeds in excess of what Tiscali could offer. From around 128kbs to about 250Kbs with madasafish. The last week or so though, my speeds have hit rock bottom. Ive averaged about 250-300Kbs when downloading, last week I hit about 28kbs. Phoned up Madasafish, explained the situation, the chap said he would look into it and do some tests and he would boost my connection. All went well for a few days until I fired up tonight, my speed has hit rock bottom again, worse than before. I can acheive a download rate of 12Kbs, just tested the speed checker a few times tonight, ive gone from 1.32Mbs to 0.12Mbs. which is less than broadband speed !! Just changed the microfilter. No change. I know the line outside is fine, because I had the line renewed from the pole to my house last year. I cannot think of anything else to do. Anyone have any ideas. I realise that when I signed up I was not going to get 8Mbs, but I was told that my line could accept speeds of approx 6.5Mbs, Im obviously not getting anywhere near that. If someone has got any ideas, I would apreciate any suggestions you would be able to make. If anyone from Madasafish is reading this.............help All the best Andy

Thinking about joining -- few questions

Hi all, Im seriously considering joining MAAF, however I see that line rental isn’t included – how much does this cost – I am looking at the MAX package which works out £11.99 per month. I decided to give MAAF a try, that's why I post this here. I have checked on various pages for availability of broadband using the number of the BT line that is installed. The line is currently not in use. All (MAAF, Namesco, Plusnet) say it is available (with 6.5 MBit). However, the BT Wholesale Availability Checker (forwarded from http:// www.thinkbroadband.com / btavailability.html) says this: "For Telephone Number 01926xxxxxx on Exchange SOUTHAM Your exchange has ADSL broadband. However, despite an engineer's visit to your premises it has been proved not possible for your telephone line to support broadband service. Please accept our apologies. The actual speed that you get in the end will depend entirely on the physical length of your line from the exchange to your home and the quality of your internal wiring. Here are the important things to remember when you first get speeds up to 8Mb: 1. Your first 10 days of "speeds up to 8Mb" will be a period which your line will be tested to determine what the optimium speed is that your line can carry. During this time you may experience slower speeds than expected or intermittend connection issues. Don't worry too much about it - this should resolve itself by day 11. 2. Connect using your master socket. 3. Have a microfilter fitted to every phone socket that is in use and remember to include sockets being used for FAX machines and SKY TV boxes. 4. Use a router and not a modem. If you have an option between using a USB or ETHERNET port to connect, choose the ETHERNET port everytime (especially for the Apple Mac users). Leave the router on as much as possible during the first 10 days. Because speeds up to 8Mb can be sensitive here is some basic speed troubleshooting for speeds up to 8Mb. If you do need to call the support centre you'll be ahead of the game if you know the answers to these questions and follow these steps prior to calling in it should save you some time (and possibly a phone call). Are you within the first 10 days of your ‘go live’ date? When you first start your broadband with speeds up to 8Mb it’s important that you turn off your router/modem and then turn it on again. This will ensure that your router/modem will synchronise when it connects to the new faster service. The 10 day stabalisiation period will commence after you have connected at the new rate for a period greater than 15 minutes. If you do not restart your router/modem, your connection speed will remain the same as you had previously. During the 10 day period, we recommend that you leave your router on all the time. The computer doesn’t need to be on, just the router. During the stabilisation period you might experience slow speeds or intermittent connection issues. Should your speeds not be satisfactory by day 11 please get in touch with your ISP Microfilters Check that every phone socket in your house that is in use has a microfilter fitted to it. Remember to include phone sockets that are being used for Sky TV boxes and FAX machines. Microfilters can be problematic if you are using a faulty one. Faulty microfilters will impact your speeds and you will get disconnections. To check your microfilters to see if you’ve got a faulty one, unplug everything from all phone sockets in the house, test each filter from the test port from within your master socket by connecting to the Internet. If you get a substantially lower sync using one of the filters you’ve found your faulty one and it will need to be replaced. Master Socket Internal wiring can influence the end speeds that you receive. If you are getting slower speeds than expected and you’re connecting from an extension socket, please move your set up to the master socket and see if your sync rates improve. If they do leave it there for three days to see if the speeds improve. If the speeds do improve it may be time to look at getting a wireless router or a very long ethernet cable. A further step if you don’t see any improvement from your master socket is to connect from the test socket that exists within your master socket and see if the sync rates improve from that location. If the sync rates improve, please stay connected to the test socket for three days and see if your speeds improve. If your speeds do improve from the test socket but not from the master socket it is most likely that your internal wiring is causing the problem and you will need to get your local phone person out to fix it. Make sure you test out everything else first (such as microfilters) before you get the phone person in! Hardware Get up to date with the latest drivers or firmware for your broadband modem/router. Most hardware manufacturers have the latest drivers available on their websites for download; we recommend that you make sure that your drivers are up to date . Apple Macintosh I love Macs and I use one at home. If you’re a Mac user do not connect to the internet using a USB connection – treat yourself to a router that’s got an ethernet cable and use that to connect. If you do continue to use a USB connection please be aware that we’ve seen problems with the Apple Mac and the Voyager 105 – if you’re using this combination of equiptment, please download the latest 105 drivers from our Website. Or even better; get an Ethernet router! Speed Tests In the instance all of the above doesn’t point towards the cause of the problem, you’ll need to get in touch with your ISP. If you're a Madasafish customer run a few speed tests at different times of day through the speed tester located in “My Account”. The speed tests that you run will become a permanent part of your account records and this will expedite the process of raising faults if you’ve done this before you call us. During the time that we’re dealing with your query I would recommend performing a speed test daily. Change in Your Sync Speeds If your sync rates decrease, your throughput speeds will immediately decrease too. If your sync rate increases, it will take three days for your throughput speeds to increase. Go figure. If you see an increase in your sync rate please stay connected for three days and you should see an increase in your speeds; provided that the sync rate stays at that rate or higher. Getting in Touch With Your ISP If you perform all the above troubleshooting and nothing seems to appear as the immediate cause of the problem, call or email your ISP. Should you write in please make sure to include all the troubleshooting that you’ve performed as outlined above, this will mean that your ISP will be able to look at your speeds in greater depth straight away. Also, if you write to your ISP, be sure to include your username so that we can locate your account. In October 2006 i switched the line rental £9.99 inc vat & foc eve/wk calls 500 mins per month, this has just been increased to unlimited, which is great news for our family as we dont use the phone in the daytime. Customer service's are great & so is tech help at 4ppm but i dont need them on a regular basis. You get what you pay for with any company out there, my last bill was for £30.75 line rental, calls & b/band & you cannot GRUMBLE at that can you ?. Dont be fooled by free gimicks, You only get what you pay for & you do with MADASAFISH.COM P.s. no i dont work for Maaf, but i'd make a good sales rep for them..............The choice is all Yours... I'm Samara from Madasafish. I take a great deal of pride in Madasafish's Customer Support and if you have any questions about our services (or your services with us) I'll be checking this forum frequently to answer your questions. Here are the questions that I normally get about our services: Do you support Macs? Yes, we have Mac compatible broadband. Our free router has both a USB and an Ethernet port, if you have a Mac please use the Ethernet cable to connect. You've got 5GB, 20GB and 50GB packages, how will I know how much usage is enough for me? The majority of our customers do not exceed 3GB in a month. If you've already got broadband with someone else and you're unsure how much usage you accrue, there are many applications available online which you can download for free that will let you know how much you use. I've heard really good things about an application called Netmeter. Otherwise here is an example of what you could do with 5GB of usage in a month: General web browsing 125 hours a week Sending and receiving photos (by email) 125 per week Downloading MP3s 75 per week Sending and receiving emails 1000 per week Watching online videos 75 minutes per week Online gaming 5 hours per week TOTAL 5GB a month If you do exceed your included usage in a month, additional usage is charged at £2 per GB exceeded or part thereof. If you do sign up with us and you find that you want to switch packages to one with a different usage tier, this is quite simple to do! All you need to do is go back to the sign up pages and sign up for the package you wish to move to. There is no time added onto your contract for doing so. You advertise "Speeds up to 8Mb", what does this mean and what speed will I get? Speeds up to 8Mb means that we'll provision the fastest speed that your line can handle, up to 8Mb. The physical length of your line from the exchange to your home, the quality of your phone line and the amount of broadband traffic going through your local exchange will determine the end speed that you get. On the first page of our sign ups you enter your telephone number and on the second page you'll see what speed we estimate to be able to bring you. Of course this estimate is provided that you're connecting from your master socket and your hardware is set up properly. If you just want to check what speed we estimate for your line there is no obligation to go any further into the sign up process after you've got this info. I've seen reports recently where ISPs take the phone numbers that have been entered in the 'what speed will you get' boxes and give them to their sales teams for cold calling - we don't do that. You can enter information on our site and we won't call you or pass any of your information onto third parties. We respect your privacy. You talk about microfilters a lot .... Speeds up to 8Mb are very sensitive to the proper hardware set up. The most common cause of problems with speeds up to 8Mb that I've seen is microfilters - either having a faulty one in use or not having them properly set up. Remember that you must have a microfilter fitted to every phone socket that is in use in your home. Remember to include phone sockets that are being used for things such as SKY boxes and FAX machines. Do you guys answer your emails? Try us out - email your questions to care AT madasafish.com, we aim to respond to all queries in 24 hours! How much does it cost to call your support lines? Our support lines are charged at a flat 4p a minute (excluding mobiles). How often will I need to call you? Broadband is very simple to install and we've got to great care to have up to the minute support pages, a service status RSS and "My Account" which makes it easy to manage your account online. Additionally I'm contactable online in the forums and if you need any help, give me a shout! You shouldn't really need to call us very often at all! Our Support Pages: http://support.madasafish.com/ RSS Service Status: http://support.madasafish.com/what-is-rss.asp I need a static IP address, do you supply these? You can claim your free static IP address with us through "My Account" after your broadband with us has gone live. "My Account" is our online account management area and it's really simple to use. Can I migrate to you and do you accept LLU migrations? Yes and yes. Have you signed the Voluntary Ofcom Broadband migration - Industry code of practice? Yes, we are strong supporters of consumer rights when it comes to Migration Authorisation Codes (MACs). You can find the whole code here: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/advice/codes/bbm_cop. I hope that answers some questions that you may have, please keep post if you 've got more questions! Kind regards, Samara
